What impact is the winter storm having on the Carolinas and surrounding states?
A dangerous winter storm begins to move offshore. I'm Jack Callahan, Fox News. But the Carolinas, Georgia, and Virginia are still under states of emergency as that big winter storm brings dangerously cold temperatures and strong winds. Fox Weather's Mike Seidel is on the ground in Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina.
Overnight, we've had 8 to 10 inches of snow. Temperatures have fallen now into the low 20s. 22, the wind chill is 8 degrees, and there goes that wind. We've had wind gusts overnight, 50 to 60 miles an hour. Fortunately, with no freezing rain in the Carolinas, power outages across both states just under 10,000. But that doesn't matter if you're one of them. We just had high tide.
It came all the way up to the dune line. We could have some coastal overwash up in Duck. but then the winds will come offshore. Let me take you back to Charlotte and that pileup, a hundred car pileup, massive on I-85 because of all the snow yesterday. Get this, Charlotte officially had 11.0 inches, their biggest snowfall in 22 years, and since 1878, that's number four.
Millions of Americans still face harsh winds, snow, and extreme cold. There are also power outages reported. The federal government is in a partial shutdown after a short-term funding bill stalled in Congress, as Fox's Chad Pergram reports from the Capitol.
About 78% of the federal government is unfunded right now as the Pentagon, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Transportation. Last week, the House of Representatives passed a full spending bill for all of these departments and sent this over to the Senate. Well, Democrats started to say, we need some changes with ICE.
So we want to defund the Department of Homeland Security, only fund it for a shortened period of time. And so what they did is they broke off the DHS funding bill. Well, at that point, the Senate and the House of Representatives were not aligned. So they have to pass in the House of Representatives what the Senate did. Otherwise, the government shutdown continues.
Members of the House due back tomorrow to vote on the Senate bill. America's listening to Fox News.
