Chapter 1: What recent legal developments involve Luigi Mangione?
Luigi Mangione's life has just been spared. I'm Dave Anthony, Fox News. The death penalty is now off the table. After a federal judge's ruling a short time ago ahead of a hearing starting now in New York City, where Mangione is charged in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in late 2024, shooting him outside a hotel.
The judge has agreed with Mangione's defense team to throw out the most serious charge against him of murder through use of a firearm and another firearms weapons charge. Fox's Nate Foy also reports from outside the court. The judge denied Mangione's defense team's request to suppress some of the evidence.
Mangione is still charged with murder in state court, but New York doesn't allow the death penalty. A former CNN anchor is behind bars in California.
Don Lemon was arrested in Los Angeles by federal agents just after midnight Los Angeles time at a hotel.
Fox's Bill Mellugian. Lemon was with anti-ice protesters earlier this month when they interrupted a church service in St. Paul, Minnesota. Three others had already been arrested facing federal charges. Don Lemon's attorney calls the journalist's arrest an attack on the First Amendment. We appear to be just 13 hours away from another government shutdown.
A partial one this time, unlike the one in the fall. Because Democrats refuse to fund homeland security in a larger spending bill unless there's ICE reform. House Minority Leader Akeem Jeffries tells Fox.
Taxpayer dollars should not be used to brutalize or kill American citizens or to violently target law-abiding immigrant families.
There is a Senate compromise in the works to fund DHS only two weeks and the rest of the government through September. Fox's Ryan Schmelz is at the Capitol.
President Trump is encouraging Republicans to vote yes, but the deal still faces several hurdles. It still needs 60 votes in the Senate to break a filibuster and has to pass the House next week, meaning the government will be shut down for at least the weekend.
