Hey there, it's Debbie. Today's episode is a special re-release of a favorite conversation from the archives. Unless you're a longtime listener of the show, there's a good chance you haven't heard this one before. And even if you have, you just might get something completely different from it this time around.
You want to be having some conversation with your child about this and ongoing so they understand why there is a difference here. And part of talking to them about it is listening. And hearing what they have to say about it rather than just saying it's, you know, of course you're important. Of course, your brother or your sister has this issue that you don't have. You want to say, oh, how do you feel about that? What do you understand about what Johnny is dealing with?
Welcome to Tilt Parenting, a podcast featuring interviews and conversations aimed at inspiring, informing, and supporting parents raising differently wired kids. I'm your host, Debbie Reber, and I'm excited to be bringing to you a show on the topic I probably get requested the most, and that is how to manage the dynamic between siblings, specifically when one or more siblings is neurodivergent and the other, or more than one other, is neurotypical. When I was prepping for this episode, I posted on the Tilt Parenting Facebook page and asked for questions for my guest. And I was flooded with so many concerns and challenging scenarios, a lot of overlap there, a lot of really interesting questions. So I searched high and low to find an ideal guest to get into all of it, and I found a fantastic one, Dr. Jill Emanuel.
Jill is the Senior Director of the Mood Disorders Center at the Child Mind Institute in New York City, and is a clinical psychologist with a breadth of experience in the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with mood and anxiety disorders. I had read an article on ChildMind's website called Siblings Under Stress, and I instantly reached out to get Jill onto the show. So this is a jam-packed episode as we really do get into all of it.
What is the core challenge of sibling dynamics when one child is neurodivergent?
How to handle double standards when it comes to time and energy and attention focused on different children, how to talk to our kids about what's happening with their sibling, repairing sibling relationships in the aftermath of intense, aggressive, and even harmful behavior, and so much more. So if you have more than one child and are struggling with what's happening between them, I hope this episode gives you some hope, some great insights, and some practical strategies to bring a little more peace into your day to day. Before I get to our conversation, I have a few quick announcements. First, there are several new supporters of this podcast that I wanted to give a shout out to. So a special thank you to Greth Foss, Carla Cram, and Amy Pedato.
Thank you so much for being a part of this community and for helping support the production costs for this show. I'm so grateful for your help. And now here is my conversation with Dr. Jill Emanuel about managing complicated sibling dynamics. Hello, Dr. Emanuel. Welcome to the podcast.
Hello, thanks so much for having me.
I'm super excited that I found you through the Child Mind Institute, which I've been, you know, I share a lot of the resources and great content throughout the TILT community. And I'm just super excited to be talking about this topic today.
