I'm Debbie Reber, and you're listening to Full Tilt Parenting. Today, we're unpacking a topic that I know a lot of families struggle to understand, obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD, especially when it shows up in kids. My guest is Dr. Tamar Chansky, a clinical psychologist and the founder of the Children's and Adult Center for OCD and Anxiety. Tamara's helped thousands of children and families learn to manage fears and compulsions, and she's just released the newly updated and revised edition of her seminal book, Freeing Your Child from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. She's also the author of Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking and Freeing Yourself from Anxiety. This is tomorrow's second time on the show, the first time we talked about kids and negative thinking.

But today we're going to be talking about how our understanding of OCD has evolved over the past 25 years. We'll be talking about what intrusive thoughts really are and how parents can recognize and respond to them with compassion and clarity. Tamara is also going to walk us through her five-step approach for helping kids manage OCD effectively, and she offers a message of hope. With the right support, children can learn to take charge of their thoughts and lead full and joyful lives. This is just such a fascinating conversation. If OCD is something that is touching your life, your kid's life, and other kids in your community, this is a must listen. Can also be a must watch. If you want to check this out on YouTube, head over to the Full Tilt Parenting YouTube channel and subscribe.

And then you can watch all of my interviews there. Thanks so much. And here's my conversation with Dr. Tamar Chansky. Hey, Dr. Chansky, welcome back to the podcast. Hi,

Debbie. So great to be here.
Debbie Reber 2:12
I'm looking forward to exploring OCD with you. And I actually just want to give a shout out right now because our conversation when you were on a few years ago was so fascinating. We talked about negative thinking and kids, and it was something that I personally was really interested in. I got a lot of great feedback from the community as well. So listeners, I would encourage you to listen to that. If you haven't, I'll have a link in the show notes page. But today, we're going to be exploring OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder, and celebrating a revised and updated edition of a book that you wrote about it, which came out 25 years ago. Is that right? I

know. It's a warp of time, Debbie. I don't understand it because it really does not feel like that. But yeah, that is my history. But interestingly, you know, so much has happened really in the intervening years, when I first wrote that book, there really wasn't a book for parents, families about OCD. And so even though I was encouraged by various people to write a broader book about anxiety, I did that later. But I really wanted to take what I was learning from these families, I would really say in the trenches, I mean, it just OCD turns your life upside down. When you're parenting a child with OCD, not only are you having to do the regular things of parenting that can be daunting every day, eating, sleeping, getting children to school, homework, sports, whatever, all of that through this obstacle course that is really frightening for parents and kids.
Tamar E. Chansky 3:55
And so I just really wanted to take what I was learning from the family's who were bravely facing OCD and getting better and share that. That's how that book happened 25 years ago. And then just kind of a happy thing happened that I was chatting with my publisher and said, you know, I was thinking of doing some, I don't know, some Instagram for the 25th.
