What makes this episode feel like classic Game of Thrones?
This episode was the most classic Game of Thrones of any House of the Dragon episode yet. The rats are gone and in their place are cats, which is itself familiar, right? Who else got led into the tunnels and got lost thanks to a cat? Well, Arya, of course. I love that. And while down there, Arya overheard Varys talking about his little birds, among other things. Lo and behold, we have a man playing the spy game of thrones with a lot more grace than he does Syvath. Certainly Varys is a lot more composed than Lord Ormond, but they both use children as pieces. This is the use of little birds before Varys' use of little birds. Although I think these ones still have their tongues, thankfully. and coins, something Varus also did in A Feast for Crows to sow discord, where in this one we have a feast for traders.
We actually have to work a little bit harder on this one, thanks to those Game of Thrones vibes. There's just more scenes. The pacing is hyped up, it's accelerated, so we move from location to location quickly, and there's a lot total, so... But it's really rewarding when you take all that and look at each scene and location and plot point sort of as one. A lot comes together. For example, looking at all seven Kristen Cole scenes as one is very revealing. And it's pretty hard to do that in the moment as you're watching. For example, I doubt you even caught that there were exactly seven. And that's great because his end speech that, played over multiple other scenes, including his own, was devoted to The Seven.
And there were seven in The Feast for Traitors. So this is just cool. Too bad it wasn't episode seven, but hey, I'm glad we still have so much season left.
