Paul Kent 0:01
G'day, welcome to Kenty Prime Time. We're here, we're back with uh the great Paul Kent. Was? Good to be back, mate. Good to have you back. And obviously Paul Crawley. Crawley, good to see you, mate. I know I won't be you when I come in one day and it doesn't say Kenty prime time, it says something else. It might say was prime time or something. Crawley prime time. Crawley prime time. It's already in the plans. Hey, that's the way media works. That's the way media works, mate. You never know. There's never there's never a cold grave in in media. The minute the minute someone leaves their grave, someone's straight into it.
Paul Crawley 0:30
I remember one time I was young like at channel nine and um There was a big knife sitting on the desk. Someone had had a birthday party and one of the old producers. I said to him, What's the knife doing there? He said, That sun is something you'll never see again. Usually it's in your back. That's true.
Paul Kent 0:47
Well actually it's startled We used to say this just quickly on that. I'll tell you the story. I we always I told Icon once about the Wally Pipp story. I said, mate, you he he was talking about we're talking about him someone having a day off and I said, mate, you gotta remember Wally Pipp. That was the Jimmy Breslin online. Right. He uh he worked under the Wally Pip principle. So it makes more sense if you're American. But Wally Pipp was a f uh first baseman for the New York Yankees. And yeah, baseball they play a hundred bucks Think back then it was a hundred and fifty four games or fifty two games or something back then. Uh anyway, and every now and then when they're not feeling right, they just say to the manager, mate, I might have today off, and then you have the day off and someone else comes in.
Paul Kent 1:24
So he said to his manager this day, Look mate, I'm feeling a bit under the weather, I might just have just rest up today. So he went out and um what's his name? Uh Hey Bruce. Lou Gary came in. Lou Gary came in and played the next I think it's two thousand one hundred and thirty eight games. Well the kid never gotta look in ever again. Uh and that was always a rule in media, mate. If you if you if you take the day off, someone will come in and take your spot and uh they'll be taking your job, so What's your take on the media landscape at the moment? You know, I mean uh you two are old store wart. I mean there's a lot of change It's changing shit, mate. I look I I'm grizzled so I I've got a biased opinion on it, but look, it's changing a lot.
Paul Kent 2:07
It's funny. I I I was watching this show the other day. And now talking about uh the idealism of the j of that job. Uh th there's still this bullshit narrative in media, the idealism of that we're out after the truth. Now that might be part of it, but that's not that's not the driving part anymore. It's they're after clicks. You ain't gotta look what's happening now with uh all the Swan stuff. Uh just whatever whatever allegation or salacious rumor or whatever uh uh they can attach to that story to put that in a headline, to put that in a on the website to get people to click on it. That's what it's all about. Uh the truth, the due diligence, the the presumption of innocence, that's all just that's just b all been run over in uh in that case.
Paul Kent 2:58
Uh and that's just the way it operates these days. Uh It's changed look look, it's it'll never be the same. I remember when I was a young guy and we we came through together. We were cadets together, sitting next to each other when we were eighteen or nineteen years old or whatever it was. And uh we had this sort of idealistic sort of way about, you know, the the media and the job and we were young and we're ambitious and we were very uh wide eyed a about it all. Um And we really I think you know, back then the intention was you did want to go into it making a difference, didn't you? And and do all that. But but over time Uh yeah, like I know we used to have these bullshit town halls that my former employees business, where they get up there and they tell you, We're all about quality journalism.
Paul Kent 3:49
Mate, that lasts for five minutes.
