What is the overall focus of today’s Kenty Blitz episode?

Paul Kent 0:01
G'day and welcome to Kenty Blitz, your daily header of NRL News. Kenty, a little bit of a light news day today. Uh it's this time of the year where the clubs don't talk much, do they? Well, look, we get to this stage, Warren, where everybody just focuses on their footy. There's not a r a real lot going on. And what you find is coaches uh Really pressing harder i within the dressing room to just look, just let's just concentrate on the our job this week and the less we say the better. Uh they still believe in this old don't motivate the opposition even though I don't the funny thing is if you actually said that to the coaches, well are you guys motivated by what they've said or any more motivated by what they said.
Paul Kent 0:41
They will say, No, not at all. I we worry about our own games We worry about ourselves. So So So but anyway, that's the way we go about it in rugby leagues. Uh n nothing really has happened this week. Uh and the players are only really having to speak uh when they have to, when it's it's it's their time. So not a lot to speak about from that point of view. The games are good days. I'm looking forward to the games when we finally get there. It's just a bit of a slow week to get there. So Ken, you always you always hear about Wayne Bennett uh teams and when the players uh get interviewed after they they talk about what does Wayne Bennett doing and they always say he never really concentrates on the other team, he only concentrates on his own team and what they have to do.
Paul Kent 1:19
Yeah, well Wayne's always been that kind of coach. Uh l let's get our job right. And if we get our job right, then I've got the confidence that we've got enough talent on the team to win the game. Uh that and that's how he's always approached his cov coaching. Uh and to be fair, mm that's the old school way of uh y it used to happen. it changed over time. Uh Warren Ryan, again, I go back to him a lot, but he was the he wrote the blueprint for modern coaching and he he was the first coach that really would sit down and really pick apart opposition weaknesses and things like that. Uh then you get to the more extreme examples where you see coaches uh like Brian Smith, for example, who would come up with a different game plan every week depending on who they're playing and how they played.
Paul Kent 2:05
So he went a he would go away from his his own team style and in fact in many cases they didn't really have a style because he would p try and play a game plan geared towards uh the opposition weaknesses. I remember talking to Craig Bellamy about it once Uh, and Craig's a bit like Wayne, let's just get our job done and uh we'll be okay. And I said to Craig, uh but why wouldn't you focus on the opposition? If some guy's going out and he's making bad reads in defense, w why would you send traffic his way and uh really exploit that? Now, one, they do do that, Melbourne, so let's not pretend that they don't. But what they what his explanation was is he said if you see a guy have a bad game or he's he's doing particularly poorly in defense, for example,
Paul Kent 2:51
You see, if you go out and you focus all your f all your attack and the game plan at that guy, And he has somehow managed to fix it up during the week. You know, coach has told him, mate, this is what you're doing wrong. You're you're getting you know, standing yeah, like Wayne, for example, likes to have his outside back standing his winger and his center standing a step backwards from the rest of the defensive line. And now the reason he does that is because by them standing a step further back it gives them an extra step up their sleeve to react to whatever the the attacker's done. Uh and and so Craig sort of pointed out that if if they go away and for example, uh occasionally I say, mate, just take a step back this week and just give yourself an extra step to to be able to read what's going on.
Paul Kent 3:36
And he said they fixed it up. He said, Well then you bugger when you go out and try and play it. Because he said you you've put all this attention into one area and you got nowhere else.
