What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
G'day, welcome to Kendi Blitz, your daily hit of NRL news, and we're on the eve of Magic Round, Kendi.
What are the latest Magic Round stats and their significance?
It's a big weekend for the NRL, obviously, coming up, and something that's been a great tradition.
Yeah, it's been great.
What controversies surround the State Battle over Magic Round?
Well, I think this is the seventh year that it's been on. It's obviously an idea that's been borrowed, shall we say, from the English Super League.
How is Luke Metcalf's potential move to the Bulldogs impacting team dynamics?
They began it over there. The NRL took it on. AFL has just taken it on themselves. But it's just one of those... weekends where everybody is just happy to be in one place together and there's a lot of good
What insights were shared about the Bulldogs' recent bonding session?
moments come out of it i think it's good for the game it's good for the fans uh the footy's good uh there's gonna be a fight up there this week over uh the queensland premier coming out and saying that he's gonna put pressure on the nrl to extend their deal up there they're already i think that next year's locked in but after that it's up for grabs and uh if i know anything about the nrl though i know that there's no way they'll be bowing to that and they'll be going to the highest bidder wherever that may be where else do you think it could go Well, at the moment, everything is on the table.
What are the current standings and performance of the Knights in the NRL?
Adelaide has shown interest. Perth has shown interest. And I think Christchurch has shown interest. Christchurch has got a new stadium over there. That's apparently the Bees' News. Obviously, Perth has got an interest in taking it there because it will be the Bears' second season in the NRL. And also, it'll be, by that stage, Papua New Guinea's first season in 2028 in the NRL. So there's a look to sell it over there. Adelaide, well, Adelaide,
What integrity concerns are arising within the NRL?
The benefit of Adelaide, I think, was if it was played at the Adelaide Oval, it's walking distance from the city, a bit like Brisbane is. One of the great appeals of playing in Brisbane is you can be in the city, which could accommodate so many people, even those people who are not attending that day, who might be up there in Brisbane to attend the next day, but then the people can all leave the pub or the restaurant, wherever they're at, just walk down. It's only a 15-minute walk to Brisbane.
How is Victor Radley's suspension affecting the Roosters?
to get to Suncorp Stadium.
Well, when it started, the Queensland government paid the NRL about $2 million a year. It's now up to about $6 million, but we believe the competitors are offering $8 million. I guess my issue with moving it from Queensland is the Bernardo Benders have done a great job to build it up, right? Yeah. You know, I think there has to be a place for tradition in the game. You know, I think the grand finals should be in Sydney. Yeah, I do too. And I think Magic Round should stay up there and I think Vegas is a great hit. You know, I think sometimes, you know, money's not everything. You know what I mean?
I get that, but... It's been reported that $41 million to the Queensland economy came into Brisbane last year. If they paid $6 million and got $41 million in return, that's pretty good odds. Most punters at the track would take those odds. So, look, even if they're going to try and sell it for $8 million, I still think that's a steal, given how much money comes into the city and the state, given what they're hosting, because there's so many people who travel to it. I don't think for that reason New South Wales... would be as profitable because so many of the fans are already in New South Wales and particularly in Sydney. They wouldn't be in hotel rooms and probably even restaurants if it was in Sydney because you've got nine teams, nine Sydney teams who would just get in the car and drive across town or catch a bus.
There's a few teams which stand out at Magic Round, and you were talking about a few before, some that seem to love it more than others.
Well, it's just interesting, isn't it, Woz? Like Canberra aren't playing there, but Canberra lost their first Magic Round game but won the next five. South Sydney did it the other way. They won their first five but lost last year. So there's a few teams that they just have a – a liking for it up there. Melbourne have got the biggest score up there.
