G'day and welcome to Kentie Blitch, your daily hit of NRL news. And Kentie, yesterday we talked a little bit about the media cop. No one else seems to be talking about it. Surprised? Oh, a little. Look, I went to see what Andrew Edson wrote about it. Okay, yep. In The Australian. Not that many people read The Australian, but certainly not Rugby League. It's not a Rugby League audience in Australia. But he wrote about it. Yeah, look, I'm not surprised, but I was. Look, Malcolm Knox wrote a little bit in The Herald, actually, too, which I thought was interesting what he said. He said, basically... He believes the new rule is there to stop conflict of interest and criticism. And he said, but what you've got to be aware of is that generally things like this are a Trojan horse for what they really want to do.
Now, as the NRL has shown, as he said, they generally don't have a problem with conflict of interest. So while they're dressing it up at the moment as in all these people in media roles who have got conflicts of interest, What it's really doing is getting the Trojan horse in there to stop criticism of them. So unfortunately, we've got to live with it because other than, I suppose, go through the legal channels or get an action group or something like that, how do you stop it? How do you get rid of this? rule that they've brought in that without consultation, without really any concern for the rugby league community, they've just decided that they're going to do it. They've built it into the broadcast deal and off they go.
Well, watch with interest when the first person gets the rap across the knuckles, Kenty, because I think that'll be the Pandora's box once that happens. Well, it's got to be, yeah. Do you know what I mean? Because... There's people older than me who blew about stuff that I used to think, that's not a problem, that's not a big deal. But I was younger then. I was more able to accept the change.
But now I've been through all these different interpretations of what the game is and how it looks and how it's played. It's vastly different. And I'm getting older, so I'm pining for the way the game used to be. But the new game, this is all they know. The young kids at 20 years old, this is all they know. Let's remember, we live in a world now where many West Tigers fans only know them as West Tigers. If you're under 30, you won't remember Western Suburbs or Balmain. You just won't remember that. So, look, it's the new normal that they're creating. And this is not just a rugby league thing. This happens the world over. I saw a thing the other day, to be fair, an old author, and he was talking about the Cowboys in the Americans, in America in the 1800s.
And the Cowboy era basically only went for 20 years, right? And he said as they spread west to all this new frontier and what they loved about the cowboy, the whole mystique of the cowboy, he said as they were actually creating it, they were destroying it. Because you said they were spreading west, yeah, and there were new frontiers, cowboys living the cowboy way.
