So there a few teams have uh Yeah, or a few good smart punters have got in before teams have been announced. Uh Look, I expected it. We all expected it. We all complain about it. I've got n no problem really with it from the point of view that you're here to win the competition. Uh uh I remember when this first happened, I think Phil Gould was the first coach that ever did it, and he did it
I think it was about ninety might have been ninety-one, uh, when Penrith were about to win the minor premiership. Uh I think it was then. I'm not sure. Look, I'll get corrected if I'm wrong. Uh but Penrith were about to win the premiership minor premiership in uh I think it was a Cranola game in the last round. Um and he did that then and rested uh not a not as mass changes like we see now, but a a significant number of star players. Uh and a significant portion of the team. And he made the argument: look, they need a r a rest. They're all busted. And they're there to win a premiership. They're not there to win round 26 or round 24 or whatever the last round was back then. And that's what you've I think we've got to appreciate.
The hard part for the NRL. Is all these clubs are gonna charge full freight this week at the gate. And you're gonna go and watch the State Cup team play in s in some cases. So uh that that's gonna be that's the bit that's a little bit uh distasteful, I think, and that's the bit that uh really irks people. But I don't think there's a real solution through it all. Mm-hmm. You know, the Admiral has spoken about whether Uh and this is where they come up with this stupid wild card round which will give those teams in the from one to six an opportunity to uh play the last round, then they'll have a wild card round the next weekend. at which they can all rest and then they'll come back for the first week of the finals the week after.
And in their in in their head they think that'll work. But th there's no guarantee that clubs won't say, Well m we've got an opportunity here to have two weeks off. Yeah? 'Cause the other thing too you uh you want to start throwing back to history. I remember back in the early eighties And I was only very young, um, 'cause I'm not very old, was. No, true. Uh but no but but I remember the the consensus back then when Jack Gibson was coaching Parramatta was back then it was a top five and the minor premier got a week off. Then they played the winner of two versus three. Uh, and then the winner of that went into the grand final, which meant if you won that game, you also had another week off. And there was an idea then that uh a week off play a game that another week off uh was too much.
And so there was look, while nobody ever suggested anybody threw a game, there's a s there was a sort of a a speculation around that that they weren't trying too hard to win the game because they needed the the belief was that the coaches thought their players needed that week to week to be battle hardened for the grand final. So It's not it's not like this is a nude problem for the game. We treat it like it's a nude problem and for some people uh in and around the game, uh running the game, uh it's probably is the first time they've come across it. But it has been around the game uh for some time this sort of problem. Uh and there's n there's no easy answer to it because uh th you wants and needs change over time.
Kenny, it's interesting when we talk about having a week off, but I remember back when it was five teams in the semifinals, they used to have a playoff on the Tuesday night. Tuesday night, yeah, Tuesday night, yeah. yeah. I m I remember Penruth, I thought the first final series Penriss ever made came after a a Tuesday night playoff. And it it's uh it it was quite common.
