He was an assistant with Wayne Bennett at the Dolphins. He was an assistant until the beginning of this season with Michael Maguire and then last year, obviously, with the Broncos when they won the premiership.
It looks now like he might be taking the job at South Sydney as an assistant to Bennett for next season. He has been also sounded out about taking the St. Helens job, but he's indicated he doesn't want to move overseas. So where's Hornby going from South? Well, look, I think Hornby might be doing the attack there. So, you know, Teo comes in as a defensive coach. Obviously, Darius Boyd's put his hand up. He said that, look – and I like the way he handled himself. Darius, he came out and he basically said, look – it's up to the qrl they need to do their due diligence they need to have a real proper look at it and make sure that they're certain on what they're they're after he said that said if they pick up the phone and call him he'd have the conversation now darius has coached queensland under 19s the past two seasons uh he's had success there so he is coming through the ranks in that area so uh but look i don't think they're anywhere near uh
an appointment. Obviously, Matt Ballen's the other guy we spoke about yesterday as well. He has been there and assisted Michael Maguire at the Broncos, and also he's done some assistive work with the Maroons as well. Do they have the same policy as New South Wales? Well, I'm led to believe they don't. New South Wales have this policy, which I think is ridiculous. That you can't be a club coach and also an origin coach.
How does the QRL’s policy on club‑coach dual roles differ from New South Wales?
The fascinating part about that is that that was brought in after a review was ordered some years back when they went through that losing streak when Melman Ingram was coach. And that essentially the person that led the review and recommended that they no longer appoint club coaches was Brian Canavan, who's now the chairman of the Queensland Rugby League. But the Queensland Rugby League don't have that policy, I'm led to believe, which means that they could go to club land, which would mean they only get Wayne Bennett. Now, I think Bennett would only do it if it was a bit of an SOS call, if they struggle to find someone. I don't think they will. I think they'll find someone else. But it's such a – look, this is how quickly you think your fortune can turn, right?
You go back to Mal Meninger's first year. What was that, 2006, I think it was? Queensland got beaten the first game. It's Mel's first game as origin coach. Now, we all know he left a few years earlier, the Raiders. He left in really... look, unfortunate circumstances. He basically, he failed to do the job.
