We've got a lot of news on a lot of halves actually and then we'll be talking about previewing the games a little bit later on. Let's start off with Sam Walker. There's a newspaper article today that he looks likely to stay at the Roosters. Yeah, there's a lot going on, Woz. There's a lot of background shenanigans happening at the moment, a lot of positioning. As you know, it's getting closer to November 1. Sam Walker will be free to negotiate with anybody November 1, as will someone else who plays halfback, for instance, Nathan Cleary. And... You've got the Roosters who, for whatever reason, they delayed their conversation with Sam Walker.
There was just all this talk through Origen, whether he's a big game player and whether he could deliver him a grand final.

And look, the Roosters... upper levels of management are sort of putting it out there that their talks have progressed, that they're getting close. We're led to believe that the only hold up is that Walker wants a 10-year deal, the Roosters are more looking at a five-year deal. I'm not quite sure that's exactly the case. I'm led to believe that they really haven't sat down to discuss and figures and terms haven't really been addressed. Well, that's what the article said today. It said they haven't sat down yet, but it also mentioned numbers, which I thought was odd.
Well, it sounds to me like the roosters are basically trying to preempt how close they are. Look, in the background, what we know is this. You've got Papua New Guinea free to negotiate from November 1. Three months. Three months away. Yeah, with Sam Walker and also Nathan Cleary. Now, they are not allowed to openly discuss what they are thinking or players they are interested in. They're not allowed to say any of that. But we've got Shamus on tomorrow with primetime. We'll probably ask, we'll see what we can get out of him about what their plans are. But what we do know is that Nathan Cleary, for example, has put off his talks about extending his deal at Penrith. He told Penrith, look, let's just put it off till after Origin.
That period has now come and he's asked them now to put it off till after the season. So he's holding off. And the belief is he's really going to have a look at what Papua New Guinea are offering. Crazy not to. Crazy not. Well, it's tax-free money. Plus, everyone's talking about Jerome Luai and the $3 million he's going to make in third-party sponsorships. It's beyond that. It's more than that. The reality is it's more than that. And Cleary and Luai grew up together. They play all their junior footy together. So, look, I don't know how in-depth the conversation would be, but certainly you would imagine that Luai has just said to him, because he's got the opportunity to get Cleary to come over and help him, you know, kickstart the Chiefs, that he's just, if he's shown him a little bit of a glimpse of what's there for him, Cleary would be mad not to listen to it.
So... Take it as read that Clear is their number one target on November 1. Chiefs. The Chiefs. Their number two, and this might be where all this other talk's coming from, is Sam Walker. They want a high quality number seven. Every team that wins a comp has to have a good halfback. The Chiefs know that. They want to be competitive from the start. So they're in the fight, but they can't, again, say anything to Sam Walker until November 1. I think the Brewsters are sort of putting it out there that it's a little bit further advanced than what it really is in a bid to just try and put the chiefs off, to slow down the talk about that, to get themselves some time to sign Sam Walker. As you said, the story in the paper that they're looking at a five-year deal, but then it later reveals that they haven't sat down to speak yet.
