And this is no joke. Every year, the IRS releases its dirty dozen, the 12 nastiest tax scams targeting you. Here are the top three. Number one, fake IRS texts and emails. Scammers send terrifying messages about suspended accounts or back taxes owed. There's a QR code. Don't touch it. The IRS will never cold text or email you, ever. Number two, viral tax hacks on social media.

That genius trick your nephew shared, the IRS is watching. We're talking audits, massive penalties, even criminal charges. You are legally responsible for every line on that return. And finally, ghost preparers. They file your taxes, pocket your money, and then disappear. You're left holding the bag, alone, facing the IRS. Don't be their next victim. What are the top three tax scams to watch out for?

Kim Komando 3:05
What's going on?
Detective Allen 3:06
Not much. I heard of that young lady last Sunday talking about AI driver's licenses. There's websites out there that you can get on. They're not on the dark web, and you can order any driver's license steadily approved from any state you want. They'll tell you how much they cost. I've worked some cases involving those, involving new car sales from dealerships.
Kim Komando 3:34
So these are fake IDs that you can buy? Yes, yes. You know what? You sent me a note. I looked at it.

How do fake IRS texts and emails work?

Kim Komando 3:40
I don't want you to say the name of the website on the air, but I clicked that link, and boy, they look good. Oh, they were good.
Detective Allen 3:46
There's two or three of those sites. How is this? And you're not on the dark web.
Unknown 3:52
They're not. How is this illegally online? If I started a website, heroin.com, and I was like, hey, I'll deliver heroin right to your front door, they'd shut me down.
Detective Allen 4:01
Well, because they are not in this country.
Unknown 4:03
So it's hard to shut them down. Ah, so if I'm going to sell heroin, I need to sell it from another country.
