Chapter 5: What should you do if you receive a call about jury duty?
Resumes are tough nowadays. You got to please AI. You got to please the employer. There's hidden trackers in there.
Yeah, you have to know about this. Inside a perfectly formatted PDF file of your resume, there could be a file that is an invisible tracking pixel. It's smaller than a period at the end of a sentence.
Chapter 6: What are the warning signs of jury duty scams?
And it tells a company exactly when you opened their job posting, how many times you've looked at it, what other companies you may be talking to. And that might tell them that maybe you're their backup choice or maybe that they are your first pick.
Chapter 7: How can you protect yourself from falling for scams?
And so here's what's going on is that if you are using like one of these online services, like a free online resume builder that requires an account, a recruitment platform that generates the PDFs for you, any service that emails your resume as a PDF attachment, that these trackers could be inside that file.
Chapter 8: What are the consequences of engaging with scammers?
And it can tell the potential employer through this pixel whenever you have opened that file, the device that you use, your location, if you have forwarded. Some of these systems can actually see if you sent the same resume to competing companies. So if you applied at both Google and Microsoft with the same resume, they might both know that.
So many things to get around. How do you avoid that?
It's pretty tough. If you did not create the PDF of your resume yourself, say using Microsoft Word, Google Docs, just assume that it's being tracked. To strip out the trackers, you can print to a PDF. So basically, you open up the resume, you hit print, but under options, you select save as PDF instead of printing it. This creates a clean copy without any of those embedded secret trackers.
So is it something where you possibly would have to make just a minor adjustment, maybe move a word, a space down each time to possibly not get caught?
Not exactly, because these are invisible little dots inside the resume. So you have to just assume that if you did not create this PDF yourself and you used one of these words, online resume builders or recruitment platform, that those invisible trackers might be in there. And it's telling potential employers a lot about your job history and what you're looking for right now.
Wow. All right. So from resumes to homework, what does ChatGPT have in connection with your homework nowadays?
Oh my gosh. So many of us are using ChatGPT like a free filing cabinet and a second brain. But what happens if, for example, you hit the wrong button and then you lose months of work? Or in this case, a professor lost over two years of work when he was experimenting with simply the settings of and disabled data sharing. It wiped out his entire chat history.
And it's not like you get a prompt like, hey, we're going to remove this. Are you okay with that? No, there's no prompt. Just two years of all this guy's emails, lectures, grant drafts, student feedback, all disappeared in an instant. And you do not get any recovery options. When this professor contacted OpenAI, they said, oh, this is all by design.
So bottom line here is that if you're working on something super important, You want to tell your AI chatbot this. Export all of this as a backup, as a Microsoft Word or a Microsoft Excel file right now, and then download it and put it in a safe place.
