When I looked at all my subscriptions, I couldn't believe how many I was paying for and not using. Streaming services, apps, memberships, it adds up. That's why I use and recommend Rocket Money. It's a personal finance app that finds and cancels unwanted subscriptions, tracks your spending, and helps lower your bills so you can grow your savings. The best part? You can cancel subscriptions right inside the app with just a few taps. No awkward phone calls or hunting for passwords. With Rocket Money, all your accounts are in one dashboard. Your checking, savings, loans, and investments are all there, so you can see your entire financial picture at a glance. It organizes every transaction automatically, sets budgets, sends real-time alerts for big charges, and gives you easy-to-read reports.

Sounds like a no-brainer until you understand what you're actually trading. Okay, these programs give insurers access to your smart home data, and they can use it against you when you file a claim. It's called lifestyle underwriting. Say a pipe bursts while you're away. Your insurer pulls up your nest history, sees that you set the heat to 45 degrees, and calls it negligence.

Claim denied. So before you sign up, one, read the terms. Specifically, what data do they collect? How long do they keep it? And who can they share it with? Next, ask your insurer in writing how your data could affect a future claim. That $60 discount could cost you thousands when it matters most. Get TechSmarts every day for free at GetKim.com. Next up, a call from my weekend show, The Kim Commando Show. Enjoy. Here's something most people don't think about. When a popular online service says it's free, you're usually paying for it with your privacy. Every click, search, and website visit can be tracked, logged, and used to build a detailed picture of who you are. And if you're not paying for the product, you're not the customer.

You are the product. That's why I protect my online privacy with ExpressVPN. Your internet service provider can see everything you're doing online, and third parties can track your activity through your IP address. I'm not okay with that. With ExpressVPN, your internet traffic is routed through secure encrypted servers and an anonymous IP address, so your online activity stays private. It's fast, reliable, and incredibly easy. Just one click. One subscription protects up to eight devices too. Right now, you can get my special offer of four extra months with ExpressVPN. Protect your privacy today. That's expressvpn.com slash Kim. Janie in Phoenix, Arizona. Hello there, Janie. Welcome to the show. What's going on?
Janie 3:00
Hello, Kim. Thank you so much for taking my call. And I want to tell you, too, that I did read your newsletter this morning, and I am learning so much by reading that newsletter because I am probably the ultimate un-techie person. I really don't understand a lot, actually, of even some of the things you say, so then I Google it.
Unknown 3:24
Do you have to do research to read the newsletter?
Janie 3:26
Well, you know what?

What smart home gadgets can affect your insurance premium?

Janie 3:27
There was one newsletter I read that was talking about VPN, and I couldn't find a definition of it in the newsletter. So afterwards, I Googled it, and now I know.
Kim Komando 3:41
Virtual Private Network. Private Network.
Janie 3:43
There you go. Yes, yes.
Kim Komando 3:46
All righty. So what's going on? And thanks for your kind words.
Janie 3:50
Yes.

How does lifestyle underwriting impact your insurance claims?

Janie 3:50
Well, you know, I wanted to ask you about home security. And to be honest, I've never really been concerned before about home security. You know, I grew up in a small town in England. It was never an issue. And honestly, I always thought that people's concern with security was a bit exaggerated, you know, maybe ginned up by the ads that they saw on TV and those companies who sort of, you know, made you feel the fear and therefore you would buy the product.
