Out loud as hey, it's Mia here and I've got a little treat for you today and it's based on a recommendation that Holly shared a few weeks ago. She mentioned an episode of Unleashed. It's a special little mini series that we did within the show. If you haven't listened to Unleashed before, it's a show for Gen X women. who need a laugh, but sometimes we talk about things that make us have a cry as well. And As we get older, a lot of us find ourselves caught between caring for our children and caring for our parents, the old sandwich generation issue. And Maybe a parent's aging and their needs are increasing or a diagnosis has suddenly changed everything for your family. I know a lot of Outlauders will relate to that.
And Our Unleashed co-host, Dr. Ginny Mansberg, has been living through exactly that this year. Her mum's been ill for quite a long time, and a few months ago she made the decision to choose voluntary assisted dying. And Jeannie came to us to ask if she could talk about what was happening. And she was originally going to talk about it on Unleashed, but I really wanted her to have a little bit more space to talk about it with her co-hosts. And so we ended up recording over a period of a few months from when the decision was taken by Jenny's mum right up until um just after she died. we sat down with her and and spoke about how she was feeling and She tells her story as a doctor, but most importantly, she tells it as a daughter.

At Unleashed, we talk a lot about getting older. We're here to have a laugh because God knows we need one. But sometimes at this stage of life we also need to have a cry. Because Gen X is in a pretty confronting stage of life. Maybe we're caring for children, trying to look after ourselves or at least pretend we know what bone density means. And for a lot of us, we've also started caring for our parents too. Watching the people who raised us getting older. Sometimes that aging is kind and gentle. If we're lucky, that's what we all hope for. But it can also be cruel. Watching a diagnosis change everything. Our unleashed co host Ginny. is in that exact position. Her mum is very ill, and has been for a long time.
And she has made the decision to choose voluntary assisted dying. Voluntary assisted dying is a legal process in Australia that allows an eligible person with an advanced and progressive condition that is causing intolerable suffering to choose the timing and circumstances of their death. It's been such a complicated long road for Jinny and her family. Unleashed has become a sort of family for us, and she's led us into this journey because she wanted to share it with you too. There are hard conversations to have when you're facing the worst countdown imaginable. Ginny herself confessed that she doesn't have all the answers, and as our resident GP, That's quite foreign for her. So all she can do is share honestly what this experience is like for her, her mum, and their family, in the hopes it helps another family.
This is going to be a three part series. We'll take you through the before The moment itself. And the after. And this first episode begins one month before Ginny's mum is going to die. This is Jinny's story. Ginny, you wanted to do this app?
Yeah. I have a An eighty two year old mum? And as we're sitting here today She's gonna die in three weeks. I know she What day her funeral's gonna be? I know what's gonna happen afterwards, I know how she's gonna die.
Can you explain, Ginny, what you mean by you know she's gonna die in three weeks?
In three weeks time, my mum is gonna be at Prince of Wales Public Hospital. And she's gonna get a needle into her arm and that's gonna deliver her a medication, that's gonna send her to heaven.
