Why did Andrew Van Ginkel decide to keep his long hair despite NFL trends?
Thanks for coming to see us. Andrew Van Genkel, kind enough to join us. Um so the big one of the big early training camp stories And this is big, was Hawkinson cut off his hair. You it looks like I mean, was it a trend that you considered where have you were you tempted at all or are you locked in?
Uh, I'm locked in for the for foreseeable future. Um you know I was shocked when T J did it. Did
were you? Yeah.
Um yeah, all good things. How
far back does this go? When did you go to this look? Like when you were twelve? I mean how far back is
No, not that not that very early. Uh I'd say freshman year of college. Just kinda got to college and just kinda let it grow and grow and next thing you knew I had long hair.
Well it's part now it's so it's I feel like it's just a part of your whole deal almost, you know?
Yeah, it's kinda the you know, football guy in me. Um you know the flow out of the helmet and um you know it's long. It it's a lot to take care of, but you know, it's it's good to have it on the field.
You never worry about it getting pulled or does it get pulled?
It does get pulled and you know, I try to wet it down, try to do other things to uh have it so the old line just slips through it. Yeah, but if I don't wet it down and it's dry, yeah, they'll get a hold of it.
You're a veteran guy, are you thirty one or thirty two? Thirty one. Thirty one. Thirty one years old. You've been through this stuff for a while. I'm always curious for veteran players how training camps evolve. In other words, do you learn as a veteran player
How does a veteran like Van Ginkel get the most out of training camp without overdoing it?
how to get what you need out of uh training camp uh without killing yourself, I guess. Maybe it's easier now 'cause there's not as much contact as there used to be. But what's the Van Ginkel approach to saying, here's how I get ready as a veteran guy, I know what I'm doing. Here's how I use training camp.
Yeah, you know, that's a good question. I think it comes down to you know, for me personally I'm trying to find that one or two things where I can improve. Um, you know, it's different techniques, you know, we got new coach Ryan Nielsen and just he his things that he's teaching, I'm trying to imply that to my game. Um, you know, so I can take my game to the next level. And you know, we got a bunch of young guys so you know, for me I try to be that leader, try to me mentor them and kinda lead them throughout the right the right way and um just to show 'em what it's like to be a vet, what it's like to you know, just do your job at a high level.
Compare your season last year to the year before. Obviously injury was a maybe a big part of the story, maybe that's part of the comparison. But give me the Van Ginkel's sense of the last two seasons for you, where they were different, where they were the same.
Yeah. Um, you know, last year I started off on the wrong foot, obviously with dealing with injuries and um, you know, working my way back, you know, building that confidence, that trust to go out there and play and um, you know, once the season kept progressing, I felt like I was trying to start to get back into my form and uh be the player I am and Um you know that twenty four season everything was going right. You know, the defense was balling out that year. Um the offense was putting up points which puts it puts the defense in positions to go get the quarterback and make plays and um when the ball's bouncing your way and you know you get tips and overthrows and they're just falling into your lap, uh puts a lot of pressure on the offense and um I think the big point of emphasis for us this year is stopping the run.
Um you know we had the most runs against Against us last year and that's something that we have to improve on. So uh you see a lot of the coaches emphasizing that and it's what we need to get better at.
Well you you make a great observation and it it's another I think confirmation of the way this thing all works together. If if if the offense is better Um You're probably gonna be able to play defensively a different way. And maybe that contributes to a better chance to get what you of course are very good at getting, takeaways, fumble recoveries, interceptions, whatever the case may be.
