Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are suing the Trump administration over the use of federal forces for an immigration crackdown there. It comes after an immigration agent shot and killed a woman in her car last week.
Minnesota Democratic Attorney General Keith Ellison says the federal government is unlawfully commandeering state resources.
We allege that the obvious targeting of Minnesota for our diversity, for our democracy, And our differences of opinion with the federal government is a violation of the Constitution.
Local officials are asking the federal court to halt or limit the immigration enforcement surge. The Department of Homeland Security says it has made more than 2,000 arrests since the current crackdown began. President Trump says Iran has reached out to negotiate with the U.S. It comes as nationwide anti-government protests are roiling the country. NPR's Ayyub Atrawi reports.
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that the US could meet with Iranian officials and that a meeting is being set up. But he cautioned that the military is also looking at, quote, some very strong options. Trump said if Iran attacks US assets in the Mideast, they will be met with a very powerful force. Iranian authorities have cut off internet across the country for four days now.
in a bid to stifle protests that they say are being stoked by, quote, terrorists. Rights groups estimate that hundreds of protesters have been killed in the demonstrations that began December 28. Iran says security personnel have also been killed. Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghachi, repeated the government's position that foreign elements are fueling the violence.
The government planned rallies in support of the regime Monday.
