The passengers from that cruise ship at the center of the recent hantavirus outbreak are being evaluated, evacuated, and eventually will be flown home. The ship arrives Sunday in the Canary Islands, which is part of Spain off of the northwest coast of Africa. NPR's Miguel Macias reports from Seville, Spain, on the work of the World Health Organization and others.
Throughout the day, starting as soon as there was daylight, health officials boarded the vessel to conduct an evaluation. Five people who were infected with hantavirus left the ship during its cruise. Three passengers died during that voyage. The transferring of the roughly 150 passengers on board started with 14 Spaniards who were ferried to land, taken to the closest airport about 10 minutes away, and flown to Madrid where they will be quarantined at a military hospital.
The CDC says of the 17 Americans returning from the ship, one person has mild symptoms of the virus and other tested positive. Dong's family has always denied these charges, and they say the case is an example of sharply worsening conditions for foreign and domestic press in China. Dong Sun says his father is forced to work long hours in prison making clothes and that doctors discovered a lung tumor recently. Emily Fang, NPR News.

Opposition conservative leader Kami Badenoch drew applause for saying she stood for a Britain where Jewish children could go to school without fear of attack. But Prime Minister Keir Starmer was a no-show, sending instead Cabinet Minister Pat McFadden.
It diminishes us all. Please, please. Who was interrupted by jeers and shouts of, where's Starmer? Friends, I hear you. I am with you. I want to fight anti-Semitism alongside you.
