What's not in the gray is that from an organizational perspective, from the owner to the management to the players, there seemed to be alignment that Mike Babcock was, in fact, their guy. Well, I don't think anybody's disputing Mike Babcock's resume as a hockey coach and what he has done from a technical and a practical point of view of preparing a hockey team to play a game he's one of the best but that doesn't mean that he's without reproach on some of the stuff he has done and how he's treated people. And by the way, Bob, it's not just the players that we're talking about.
It's support staff, it's other people in the organization, people in the office that Mike has been accused of not treating properly. which goes to what an investigation that should have probably occurred at the time in Columbus, but everybody decided, well, Mike's not going to coach again. So why drag everybody through the mud one more time? The Blue Jackets felt they had moved on from it.
And so from that perspective, it was deemed that the NHL didn't need to do the investigation. So from that perspective, it's one of those ones where, you know, could it have happened at the time? Yes, but it didn't.
John, do you think it's possible that there was enough sentiment negatively whipped up that the league went to the Columbus Blue Jackets and said, you know what, go find yourself a different coach?
I think it's possible, yeah. I think that there was a lot of influence put on between the Players Association and the league to indicate to the Blue Jackets that perhaps hiring Mike was not the wisest move.
and people decided to move on and Mike decided to move on the Blue Jackets decided to move on I think that people within the Blue Jackets organization there are people that felt that Mike was treated harshly there's also people in the organization that feel Mike was treated fairly so which is which is why now this this whole concept of
the PA and the league being involved, it's so important that it has to be addressed. You know, we've all had experiences with Mike. There are times that Mike can be overly aggressive. And I think that that's what people are trying to address right now.
And so the one thing that I think has to come out of this, one way or the other, if Mike is allowed to pursue the coaching job in Edmonton, is that Mike needs to come... I don't think come clean is the right answer, but Mike has to be transparent about what he's done how he will fix it and perhaps he will be better for it and hockey will be better for it.
At this point, I think there's enough people, I think there's enough pressure on the team and on the league and on Mike to say, okay, Mike, you better be open to criticism. You better be open to dealing with this. Because the next step is that if you are allowed to coach, you will be held to a higher standard. Do you think he can do the job? That's a good question.
