Hey, it's Bob Stauffer. I just wanted to let you know that you can listen to Oilers Now ad-free on Amazon Music, included with Prime. We have a jam-packed edition of Oilers Now coming at you. It is brought to you by World of Spas. For everybody that is making their way out to the toast of the town event out of the River Cree tonight, recognizing Terry O'Flynn, put together by Barry Stafford and the crew. Looking forward to seeing you guys there after the show today. The Edmonton Oilers will play the Anaheim Ducks. They pounded Vancouver last night 6-1. The Canucks 4-0. fired Patrick Alvien and made it official this morning, their general manager. We'll have thoughts on that game, audio recap, all at 4.30, because we're going to jump right into it on the River Creek Resort and Casino Hotline.
And welcome back to the show. Our winner is now headliner today for Wilhock Beef Jerky. Others can try to imitate, but nobody can duplicate the great flavor of Wilhock Beef Jerky, only available in Leduc. He's making the tour for now. Because he's got a book out called Earned. Who knows? Maybe he'll be making the tour shortly as an NHL executive. The good news for our next guest is we're not doing this interview on Zoom. We welcome back Chris Pronger. Hello, Chris. How are you doing? Hi, Bob. How are you doing? Good. You want to know why it's good that we're not doing it on Zoom? Where are you right now? No, you'd be the second best looking guy in the... Oh, look at you. Hey. Well played. There we go. Look at you coming out with the big ones.
Yes, there we go. Hey, we got anything to talk about? You been in the news at all here at Edmonton over the last week? I guess not, huh? yeah a lot's going on i guess yes that's uh uh we'll get to that momentarily but the first thing i want to do because i want to i want to the book is out it's called earned nhl legend chris pronger reveals the hard truth behind greatness the talent opens the door but only relentless standards ownership and grit keep them open why did you decide to write the book
And as I began to, you know, I kicked tires on it, you know, for the last 10 or 12 years and, you know, whether different publishers or writers or what have you, or, or myself kind of kicking tires on it, just for whatever reason, it wasn't the type of book I wanted to write or just wasn't the right timing. And as I began to build up my speaking platform two and a half years ago, I started researching for, as I started writing my speeches and, You know, I really started to get a sense of a framework for a book and just a lot of the life lessons that I learned and, you know, interesting stories, good and bad. You know, the failures, the successes. To me, it really felt like something that could make an impact with a lot of people.
Did you ever see the movie Any Given Sunday? The football movie? The speech by Al Pacino. When Al Pacino says, I have made every poor decision a man of my age can make. Like when I drop a little... I'm right there with you. Yeah, that's what I'm saying, man. There is not a guy over 50 years old listening to this show right now that isn't thinking the same thing, man. I have been there. And it's interesting because you talk about, you know, the foundation being standards. What does that mean?
It means what are your non-negotiables? What do you live up to every single day? And in my case, you know, when I had that, if you read the book, you'll learn that I met with a sports psychologist midway through my third year pro first in St. Louis, where I was struggling mightily and met with him. And that was one of the first questions out of his mouth were, what are your standards? And I sat there dumbfounded because I didn't have any. I just loved to play the game, knew how to play the game, and was passionate about playing the game. But in those moments where we don't feel good or we're under duress or struggling, I would wilt or I would not play to the best of my abilities. And so as I thought about that question and then the ensuing questions as he peeled back the onion layers, I set out three very simple standards.
