We are going to head off to the River Cree Resort and Casino Hotline at 780451-8800. The River Cree Resort and Casino excitement bet on it. gonna pass a note along uh to Derek back at the eight eighty Chad Studios. Uh I'm told that we are having some issues right now with our app, so maybe have them look into that. We go to Randep Chandys, our order's now headliner for Will Hawk Beef Jerky. Others can try to imitate, but nobody can duplicate the great flavor of Will Hawk beef jerky. It's only available in LA in Leduc, Alberta. Hello, Randy, how you doing?
Bob, I'm well. How are you? Good, we're here. There you go. We're ready to go. That's right. We made it. Look, I just did a I just jumped on the show at uh about uh three uh twenty three year time and talked about Mark Messier because I was on uh doing an event yesterday. Uh and m may full disclosure here, Marc Messier was my favorite player. He's entitled to have his opinion. He had some strong opinions. He I I didn't mention this in the in the clip earlier. Very close relationship with Chris Chelios. And Chelios is not a guy that's sh uh shy to speak his mind on issues and uh players will support players at times. Um but I I reminded the listeners that, you know, there are people that believe that Mark played a significant factor in the demise of Roger Nielsen with the New York Rangers.
And certainly with Tom Rennie in Vancouver and in both situations replaced sort of technical skilled uh quieter coaches with the big personality known as Mike Keenan. What is the Marc Messier legacy here in the Vancouver marketplace uh for that time period when Keenan came in to replace Rennie?
Yeah, in listen, he, as you know, is one of the greatest leaders, if not the greatest leader in in HL history. There's uh an award named after him, but his legacy in Vancouver is not a great one for that reason. You mentioned um, you know, a lot of people in Vancouver feel like he, you know, basically uh forced the move to bring Mike Keenan in. And then when you talk about just player leverage and you know, this is a conversation We have a lot today with rising salaries and players calling their shots. You know, back uh way back when, when Marc Messier came to Vancouver, uh, he exercised some leverage there too. Trevor Linden was a very popular player. He was the captain. Messier took the captaincy. There's some people saying that, you know, there was uh he was insistent on wearing number 11, which had been taken out of uh circulation for uh the late Wayne Mass.
So you know player leverage. Um that era there seemed to be a lot of in Vancouver and as a result, uh when it comes to Mark Messi, as a result, his legacy in Vancouver, um it was a short time in Vancouver, but it's not a good one, which I know is very different from his legacy in Edmonton and New York. Yeah, absolutely.
All right. Um, you know uh I've been going into year nineteen round deep and a and the oilers were in the decade of darkness, uh, for the first uh nine of th those seasons and it was tough. And uh I can tell you that you know, they were often the butt of the jokes around the league and then Evans got lucky. They got a guy by the name of Connor McDavid and they also got Leon Dreysuttle and they've been a consistently, you know, lost uh
