I did think Isaac Howard set up some looks. He did set up some opportunity. Yeah. So there's creativity in his game. There's the offensive instincts, of course. And I thought, you know, last night playing with Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent Hopkins, there was evidence of that, I thought, last night.
There's definitely an adjustment there, too. You think about how he played with the Oilers in the regular season last year. He wasn't playing with Newton Hopkins and Hyman. He was a little lower in the lineup. He goes down to Bakersfield, and he gets a bunch of confidence, and he comes up. We saw the press interviews, and you knew that he was going to be determined this year. The offense hasn't come yet, but for a guy who's been flung into a situation, I think he's a couple months younger than me. What do you think of Shakir Mukhamadoulin last night? I mean, a lot of excitement there coming back from the Darnell Nurse trade. And to put it in Mike Babcock's words, there's trees and there's shrubs. Yeah. Shakir Mukhamadoulin is definitely a tree.
He's a tree. I thought he was a quiet game. The way he plays, he's going to be the type of guy where you're going to be like, If you don't notice him, it's probably pretty good that he's making smart plays and not trying to do a lot. I don't expect a lot from him offensively, but to play a physical, strong game, and I think he put his best foot forward yesterday. So, yeah, that's a good sign. You talk about the competition within the team. It's good to have a lot of competition on the back end, and I think they... The Oilers most definitely will. I really thought Ryan Shea looked good in preseason game number one. Yeah, he scored a goal. It was a pretty nice goal, too. It
was filthy.
Yeah, it was. I don't know that I expected that. But... I mean, and we talk about preseason lineups being a big discrepancy some nights. There was a big discrepancy that night, let's be honest. So, okay, fine. I mean, you do that there. I don't know that we're going to see a ton of that in the reg season. Maybe we will. I mean, who knows? But a first look and what we have seen through camp, I mean, day in, day out, all of it has been incredibly positive for Ryan Shea. So he looks like a really good fit.
Yeah, and we were talking about roles a little bit in the offseason as well because that was kind of a hitting point with the hiring of Mike Babcock. You know, the argument there was that, you know, with Chris Knobloch maybe running things less ice time for the guys in depth roles, and it kind of felt like they were playing a little bit lost out there and, you know, struggling to find an identity. With Mike Babcock coming in, and you watch the way that Shakir Mukumadoulin played last night, and you know that there is a bit of an offensive touch to his game. we saw it with the San Jose Sharks it seemed like he really took on that depth defenseman defensive type role and he looked pretty good with it
