Delighted to have another episode of The Green Scene where we speak about all things Irish football. And as ever, I'm joined by Matthew Brennan and on the line, joined by former Ireland International Glenn Whelan. Glenn how's things?
Not too bad, thank you. Thanks for having me.
No worries. Uh Glenn, it's been a busy couple of weeks for you. You obviously started the the season over in Scotland as the Livingston manager. You had uh I think it was seven games um and uh decided to par a company. What's what was it like firstly uh uh being Livingst Livingston manager in the uh Scottish Championship and um how have you been this last couple of weeks?
Yeah, no, obviously it was a an opportunity and what I've seen as a great honour to go up and and and obviously start my head coaching role um under difficult circumstances regarding uh new players coming in and trying to get a settled squad. So yeah, to be relieved of my duties quite early in the season was disappointing and are probably very harsh on um on my point of view. But um now it's been a tough couple of weeks but I've had to sit my hands a little bit and uh now just accept it because there's not a lot I can do once the decision's been made.
Yeah, the I think you left the Livingston fifth in the Scottish Championship after two wins and three defeats. And since um since you parted ways there, the form really hasn't improved that much. They have uh they had a had a defeat, a drawn a win since you've uh since you've left. Um the club's American owner and chairman, um Calvin Ford, said um our net will be cast far wide wider uh than it was in our previous search and the focus of the search would be data uh via data analytics. Mediocrity is not a an an acceptable solution and we will continue to work to find the leader that delivers on the ambitions and aspirations of sustained high level success that we expect at Livingston. So they went back to David Martindale, their previous coach, and he's now the interim coach now up at uh Livy.
Uh what did you have to say about those comments? Like there are Pretty pretty harsh, uh all things considered.
Yeah, strong words um from an owner who had only met once. Um yeah, it was obviously a disappointment once the sentence's been released and and on what's been said, um, considering the team only won two games the the previous season in thirty-six games so um everything was data data based or data related but I think the metrics were uh were set a certain way for for the ownership um because the data that we had we were tracking in the right direction regarding obviously like you said to you there was sixteen fifteen sixteen new players coming in. We still had um the majority of the squad the previous season who had a a dismal season and we had to try and pick them him up again to to go and obviously get boy into a a new way of playing, a new system.
Um so yeah, I don't think the the the woods will be off a uh a duck's back because obviously the the man's never played, he's the ownership and obviously You've got to give him credit for that and and and and duly so. But regarding football issues and and what he speaks about then it's it's obviously reflects different because the data and the metrics um no we were tracking in the in the right way and he used the data to uh to his advantage and and didn't tell the whole truth.
