I think the week went as well as could be expected in the face of I would say unprecedented coverage and the way some people conducted themselves. And I'm not referring to anybody in the camp. Here you I'm referring to the way some of you have behaved in some respects. Right. The od the the pressure, the way some some of the stories have been chased. I worked in media thirty five years. I thought journalists were meant to be balanced. And reflect two sides of an opinion. I haven't seen that. That's just my personal great.
That's Paul Cook, the FII president speaking with media last night. Uh John and Ben. This has been uh quite extraordinary the last number of days. We'll start with yourself, John. You've you've seen it all. Where does this weekend live for you?
Oh, this is definitely unprecedented. Um in every regard. Particularly the events of Saturday, uh, with the press conference being delayed five hours. Um then we discovered that there was a actual vote of the players which we probably thought was never gonna happen. And uh from that you can see that there was seven or eight players who Didn't want to proceed with the game on Sunday. So straight away that gives an impression of a split in the camp. And then you go on to match day. And then you have all these other editions like we were aware of the Black iron bands. the uh refusal to engage in handshakes, but then you had the head bowed by all the players during the Israeli national anthem. I don't think that was visible on the uh the world feed that was that was on our T E but we could see it in the ground and clearly that was that was preempted.
So you had that uh then the game itself, okay, resounding victory, and then the interview afterwards you've played a snippet of from Paul Cook.

Um who decided to adopt the view that attack was the best form of defence. Um so all of that considered yeah, definitely very, very strange, twenty four, forty eight hours.
Forty two reported uh via David Snade that the only member of the FAI board in Bretchen was uh was Paul Cook himself. None of the other twelve board members were there uh to offer guidance or help the Irish players. Ben How did that come about last night uh with Paul Cook? 'Cause it felt sudden and then it felt like John has just outlined, I suppose to put it generously proactive.
Yeah, I mean to to give you a little bit of background, you know, Paul Cook hasn't really spoken over the last two weeks. We heard from David Crell and we heard from John Martin the week before the games, and then of course we heard from David Crell and John Martin stood up there beside him on Saturday. Paul Cook hasn't spoken and Paul Cook has been kind of very uh abrasive and and very stern with the language that he's used around this game going ahead. He has been consistently the one on the FAI board to say that this game will absolutely go ahead. And we hadn't heard from him. Um so we were chasing Paul Cook around for for a while on Sunday and it was made clear that he wasn't going to speak until after the game.
He you know, maybe he felt he didn't want his his words to impact on the game itself and maybe on the players and I I suppose briefly after we spoke to Hamer we were informed he was gonna be h made available.
