OK, we are here in the Dexcom Stadium where Ireland have just beaten Italy 57-20. I'm delighted to be joined by Grace Davitt, former Ireland player and Ulster coach. Grace, what a game. Unbelievable game from Ireland. You know, they set the stall out early, obviously great down in Galway. But, you know, how... some really good attack and play and then we've seen Emily Lane take that quick tap penalty and getting a try at the six minute mark and I think that really set the stall out early what Ireland wanted to do now Italy weren't going to just lie down they obviously came back tit for tat nearly in that first half with tries of their own and you know some really good ones but I think for Ireland it was just a whole team performance like
You look at their line-out, it was immense. We look at their scrum, really good. And what really impressed me most was their backs, attack and play. When you think about it, everyone got their hands on the ball at some stage. You look at player to match, Bevan Parsons, what a homecoming for her. but to see her with ball in hand to see Emily Lane get real quick ball from that forward pack to move it to the likes of Vivian Parsons was just brilliant and I think you know you see the subs coming on and the difference that they made as well and Yes, it got a bit glitchy in the second half, but when you're winning by that much, it's hard to keep that momentum going. But a brilliant all-round performance for Ireland and they'll be so happy with it.
They were talking all week about the need for a fast start, especially after going 21-0 down in the first half in Twickenham. They did just that. How did they maybe find the motivation? Obviously, it's a different team. Italy aren't to the standard England are. But how did they find that motivation to score a whopping seven tries in that first half? And they were so clinical about it as well. One of the things I noticed last week when they played England was when they got turnovers against England, which don't come around very often, they didn't really know what to do with it. And I see the huge difference now this week. When they won a turnover... Even if it was Brittany Hogan, you know, kick hacking it down the middle of the pitch to gain 30 metres, everyone was on the same page and I think that was crucial.
Even some of the other scores, it was an overthrow, you've seen Cliona, Maloney, McDonald get her hands on it, suddenly the ball's moved across and Ireland have possession and for me that was really crucial. taking the opportunities when you got them. So yes, Italy weren't as strong a team as England, but they still are quite physical. But Ireland had multiple carriers. They used their backs, so it wasn't just one-off runners like we've seen last week.
What were the highlights of Ireland's victory over Italy?
There was whole pods, but they worked really hard to get into position early. You've seen for one of the tries, they used the backs up the right-hand side. And then two phases later, next thing they had numbers to spread the ball wide to Robin O'Connor, where you're like, where have all these players come from? Because against England, they may be overcommitted in the rucks and suddenly there was nobody to attack. So that was a huge difference for me. But the work rate of the ball, when you're here and you can scan to the whole pitch, you're seeing the likes of Cleaning Maloney, McDonald getting up out of the line. Aoife Wafer had a really good game, even though only on for 50 minutes, but the amount of tackles she made, offloads to try, some big carries off scrums.
