Welcome into Overdrive, Thursday afternoon, a very special edition of the program. We begin at 2 p.m. as opposed to the traditional 4 p.m. I'm Aaron Korolnik, that's Dave Feschuk from the Toronto Star. The reason being, Dave, huge quarterfinal matchup in the World Cup.

France versus Morocco. France. Spot that should be Canada's. But it is occupied by Morocco. Can't wait for this game. That starts at 4 o'clock. Spain and Belgium tomorrow. England and Norway. We got Argentina playing as well against Switzerland. World Cup action's back, baby. Yesterday I missed it. I really did. But glad that it's returned this afternoon. It's a great feeling when these games are on. I mean, it would be a much better feeling if Canada was about to play. Could you imagine if Canada was playing today? The buzz in this country, in this studio, in this company. And we've been here. We've been kicking around TSN for a while today. Everyone's like, okay, you know, Leo Carlson. The offer she was matched, that got a little bit of some buzz.
But if Canada was playing against Mbappe and company today, that would be otherworldly. But sadly, that's not the case. Should Canadians be supporting the French or the Moroccans now that they were eliminated by Morocco? It's a great question. It doesn't matter to me. I'm not supporting either. But I do support great games. And this... This tournament, AK, it's marred by a lot of stuff that makes you shake your head. There's controversies. There was the stupidity of the red card situation with the Americans and the Belgians, and it seemed to blow up in the Americans' face, and there's been all this VAR controversy, and there's always just this sort of sleaziness of FIFA that kind of makes your stomach curdle a little bit.
And yet, the games are so damn good. So good. The games are so good that it just makes you feel good about the tournament, even though you know there's a seedy underbelly to it. You're absolutely right. And seeing Mbappe against that Moroccan defense in the midfield is going to be so much fun today to watch that. I can't wait for Spain-Belgium tomorrow. We just saw the Belgians... Just demolished the Americans a few nights ago in Spain. Just narrowly squeaked by the Portuguese. And then Saturday's action is what I'm looking forward to the most. We covered it all with Stephen Caldwell in about 20 minutes. But let's get to the news of the day in the NHL. Leo Carlson still an Anaheim Duck. And I want to read this quote, which I find to be particularly humorous.
From ownership. In Anaheim, matching the offer sheet was an easy decision as Pat Verbeek has intelligently left enough cap space to give us the ability to retain Leo. Like one of those Jim Halpert turn-of-the-camera things where you're like, when Dwight does something stupid, you're like... Like, sure, whatever you say. Whatever you say. That is clearly not the case. That is not what transpired. But I think what it does do, Dave, and the reason for a comment like that from ownership is to restore organizational stability, if you want to call it that. Like, we still back Verbeek. We still back Verbeek in spite of his clear misdoings. I mean, let's call it what it is. He screwed up. He didn't sign Carlson before.
Now they've got to pay him $18 million as opposed to whatever they would have had to pay him before. So... I guess Verbeek's not getting fired. I would have thought that was a likely occurrence after what's happened here and again. I wouldn't take that statement as Pat Verbeek's not getting fired. Okay, that's fair. That's fair. But it does show a level of support for Verbeek, which stuns me, frankly, because, again, he is culpable in this whole thing. He had the option to sign Leo Carlson last year, had the option to sign Leo Carlson before this offer sheet was levied and didn't do so, was playing hardball. And now they've got to pay him $18 million, and they've got to figure out what to do with Cutter Gauthier, and they've got to figure out what to do with all these dudes that they're probably going to need to move out to accommodate those two contracts.
