Starting a private practice isn't what it used to be. Today's clinicians are starting private practices much quicker, easier, and cheaper than before. Katie Brown is an adult-focused private practitioner based in Buffalo, New York, who just celebrated her two-year anniversary in private practice. And she's also an alum and now a mentor for the Start Your Private Practice program. So if you're interested in working with adults or you just want to learn from a fairly new SLP who built a specialty practice to full-time within six months so that she could work with ideal clients and spend more time with her family, this episode is perfect for you. So stay tuned. I'm Jenna Castro-Casbon, speech-language pathologist, business coach, and creator of the Start Your Private Practice system.
And I'm on a mission to turn stuck SLPs into successful private practitioners. If you're tired of dealing with high productivity requirements, high caseload sizes, and low pay, it's time to take control of your professional, personal and financial life and finally get the freedom, flexibility and financial abundance that you deserve by working with private clients in your own practice. Join me here each week as I share tips, best practices and inspirational interviews on the Private Practice Success Stories podcast. If you're a private practitioner or one in the making, you're in the right place, so let's get started. One of the things that I love about private practice is how it allows you to take control of your professional, personal, and financial life.
And today's guest is a great example of someone who has done just that. No matter which setting you work in, chances are you aren't in full control over how you treat your clients. And because most of us chose the field of speech-language pathology because we wanted to help people, then we're surprised and frustrated at how many limitations there are on us doing just that in most traditional SLP settings. Another thing that most SLPs don't have control over is their schedule. That's a common reason why people choose our field, you know, air quotes, for the flexible schedule, only to realize that other than maybe EI, most traditional SLP jobs don't have flexible schedules. Quite the opposite. It can be hard to take time off, especially if you work in hospitals.
And if you work in the schools, you may get out earlier in the day, but there's often a lot of work to complete at home, either on evenings or during the weekend. And financially? Well, SLPs usually get paid a decent salary at first, but then tend to get stuck. Not a lot of upward mobility, minimal raises, and bonuses? Forget it. It's just not something that most employers give people in our professions, which is frustrating when it's a regular part of many other professions. So what do you do? What do you do if you want more control over your professional, personal, and financial life? Honestly, start a private practice. It's the only way to get full control over your caseload, your schedule, and your life.
The interview that you're about to hear with Katie Brown is about what happens when SLPs decide that they've had it in traditional settings and want to work outside of the box. Katie is an adult neuro SLP. So if you want to work with adults, pay attention as Katie talks about her experience and how she built her practice quickly.
