Hello and welcome into Thor Talks Purple Monday edition. We're going to have the mock draft Monday at the end of this episode. But before we get into it, AJ, of course, the Vikings are in training camp. Lots of different stuff going on. So let's jump right into that first.
Yeah, absolutely. Just a little housekeeping from over the weekend, that Saturday practice. Big headline, Thor, quarterback battle, Kyler Murray with a big day. JJ struggles a little bit, it seems like. Kyler seems to be getting more comfortable and finding his stride there. What were your main takeaways from the reports and whatnot coming out of that Saturday training camp?
Yeah, so I wasn't at practice on Saturday, but all the reports that Kyler had by far his best practice so far as a Viking, and coming off the, you know, last week we had practices on the Wednesday and Thursday, and then Friday was they got forced into the indoor facility because that was the day where it was pouring, and then that sort of became like a glorified walkthrough indoors. But I was at the practice on Thursday where there was some communication issues with my Kyler running the offense. There were some snap issues. There were some turnovers there. Saturday comes back and looked like he was firing on all cylinders. These stats from Judd, our favorite practice charter. Kyler Murray, 14 of 17 on Saturday while working primarily with the first team offense.
J.J. McCarthy was eight of 16 with an interception, mostly working with the second team offense. And the way that they do it is with the second team offense, you're facing the first team defense, usually predominantly, and then vice versa, the first team offense against the second team defense. Kyler had 16 first team snaps, it looks like, and J.J. had six first team snaps on Saturday. Yeah. the reports, JJ, not as decisive in the decision-making on Saturday. Today, pads come on on Monday. The three that we've had Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday have not been padded. So we'll see now when we get the pads on where this quarterback competition goes this week.
Absolutely. And I know last week, I think we were kind of in lockstep when it comes to should we be overanalyzing snap counts and what – the pads weren't even on yet um i think this week is when you can start really it's not it's no longer a grain of salt that you're taking that stuff in stride with now it's you're looking into it more especially after the first day or two here of this week but um moving into it now will kevin o'connell give somewhat equal will he allow both quarterbacks to take a stab at those first team reps and how will it be? That being said, I think this was sort of expected. In retrospect, it's a new offense. We know that the Kevin O'Connell offense is a little tough to integrate for a lot of quarterbacks.
So you did expect some growing pains initially with Kyler Murray, Does it maybe surprise you or not that either A, it's taken him a couple days to maybe look like he's progressing strongly, or is this quicker than maybe you anticipated for him to adjust to this offense?
