Hello and welcome into Thor Talks Purple Monday edition. AJ we are just off the Vikings annual night practice, which happened last evening. Lots to discuss on today's show, so let's hop right in.
Let's let's go ahead and do it. Last night was night practice for the uh Minnesota Vikings packed TCO performance center out there in Egan. Um and there's a lot of I think key talkers to uh get into regarding JJ McCarthy, Kyler Murray, the defense in general. Like we're going to cover a lot of it, but first I think we have to and I know It's been a talker for weeks and weeks now, but we're gonna continue it here because it's just hot in the in the colds. Uh that QB competition rolls on. Um, what was your takeaways from JJ McCarthy and Kyler Murray's performances last night at uh TCO Performance Center?
Yeah, well starting with McCarthy, he started off last night red hot. Uh nine for ten, his first ten throws. He had a a a dot to Miles Price on the sideline, perfectly placed ball uh downfield. He had a deep shot to Justin Jefferson. Uh McCarthy's fastball was humming, uh seam balls, he beat tight coverage, intermediate. Um, so that was the beginning. He did trail off a bit after that for a while. Um but without putting the ball at risk. The red zone period for him was forgettable, um, was under duress from Brian Flores' defense during that. And that was a theme that we're gonna talk about a bit uh later on, uh, talking about the defense, which which looks locked in right now. But then JJ closed out uh the practice last night um strong in in the two minute period.
So red hot start, um a little forgettable. in the in the middle and then um a a solid end there for JJ to last on the others? How about on the other
s how about on the other side of that QP competition, Kyler Murray I think the talk about uh the talk was all about JJ McCarthy's red hot start. I think At least for my uh scanning of the Vikings Twitter timeline, uh Murray's performance sort of got lost in the in the fold there, at least at the beginning. Um, what did he improve as the night progressed or what what did you see from him?
Yeah, it was sort of the the opposite with Murray, where it was an ugly start by by any sort of objective view of it. Um that he threw uh multiple interceptions early in the practice. Uh James Pierre got one, Ajah Rogers got one. Uh Kyler took some easy incompletions, uh uh sort of short shorter stuff, ended up, I believe, taking four sacks overall on the night. He he did some scrambling and he had a nice scramble for a Touchdown um going right up the gut. Also had a nice uh touchdown pass to Jordan Addison in the back of the end zone. It was nice to see Jordan Addison out there, by the way. Uh Kevin O'Connell sort of tipped this off in the pregame, but we did see him out there. But and and Kyler as as the practice went on later on, um, he it wasn't as bad as it was in the beginning.
But yeah, an ugly, ugly start for Kyler Murray, picked it up a little bit in Part because of the legs. Um, and and again, he did have that good throw to uh to Jordan Addison, but overall, um, not not a great showing by Kyler Murray. And this is sort of in line with what we've been seeing here recently. This was the third straight um struggle fest for Kyler Murray in a practice session. And I I think like you know, when people are talking about the QB competition, it's the you know, before we we We we sort of saw this thing as a foregone conclusion, potentially a f a a fixed outcome in advance. Kyler is is struggling out there. And and JJ, it's it's fair, he didn't light the world on fire last night after those first ten passes, like I said.
But overall, keeping the ball down the fairway by comparison, uh right now, he is being flattered in that compar JJ against Kyler. Um, because Kyler is struggling right now.
JJ McCarthy has now earned, in my opinion, equal first team reps.
