How does Chris Rose view the impact of the World Baseball Classic on baseball's future?
Ten days. Ten days is what we got. Yep. That's it. That's it. How is everybody? We are well. I think the people in the city would be happy if Kyle Till didn't go down to injury and if Seiya Suzuki's future was a little more clear at this point. But I think we're doing well. I'm curious as to your thoughts, Chris. I've really enjoyed the World Baseball Classic. It has become a thing unto its own. What do you think about the impact of this event, this tournament, not only on the current baseball, but maybe the future of baseball as it kind of projects out? Because it's giving Dream Team back in the day vibes of maybe a whole generation of future baseball fans finding footing in watching this event. Yeah, listen, I hope it certainly does that.
And I think probably the biggest impact are in areas that we're not even going to see. Like a place like Italy, which tonight plays Venezuela for the right to then play Team USA tomorrow night in the championship game. I think those are the areas where you could see the most growth, right? Francisco Cervelli has done an amazing job. Vinny Pasquantino of the Royals has led that team.
What are the Cubs' chances of dethroning the Brewers this season?
to unprecedented heights for what they've done previously in the World Baseball Classic. So my guess is the biggest growth could be there. What does it mean for this country? I don't know. I mean, would you like to see... I would like to... I made this point on Baseball Today, today, comma, Baseball Today, comma, today. that if I were an owner of a team, I would put out a statement before my home opener that says, hey, we love the atmosphere of the World Baseball Classic. You want to bring some musical instruments in like we're allowed for the World Baseball Classic? Feel free. Let's do it. Now, is that going to work for 81 home games and 162 games? Probably not. I think that atmosphere is kind of unto itself because of the national pride that all these players feel playing for their respective countries.
But... We can learn certainly something from it. What was really nice, too, about the USA's win, Chris, was that Mark DeRosa got fully back on track.
How has the Cubs' roster changed this offseason?
We're fans of DeRosa around here. We have him on the show from time to time. He played with the Cubs, was a very popular player, but he made a mistake in that game. But last night, pulling the right levers, putting Tyler Rodgers in there in the fifth inning, the bullpen was perfect. How much do you think that win meant for Mark DeRosa, even if he's not going to admit it? A ton. And I've been friends, obviously, with Dioro for a long time. Worked with him for almost a decade up at MLB Network. But I could only imagine him telling his buddies, Wow, that was tough stuff I was going through. I mean, did you see social media? My name was mud. I mean, I misspoke. I owned it. I thought we had clinched a spot before taking on Italy.
The guys had some beers in the clubhouse.
What challenges do the Cubs face against the Brewers?
I was wrong, but holy smokes. D-Ro, what did you think of Lou Piniella back in the day, D-Ro? Lou was a tough one. Challenging. God in your grill, old school baseball guy. I don't know. It wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but won a lot of games. What can you say? That's spot on. That's tremendous. I love it. That's probably what D-Ro was doing. Look, I blasted him, too. I don't know what you guys said about him, but... How could you not? I mean, come on.
What are the latest updates on the Bears' stadium saga?
Undoubtable, you know? Yeah, he's got to own it. The stuff where... They're drinking beers after beating Mexico. Like that sort of stuff doesn't bother me unless they all thought they'd clinched a berth in the quarterfinals.
