What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Steve Stone. I certainly love Black Sabbath. Former MLB Cy Young winner.
Steve Stone, the first American League pitcher since Denny McLean to pitch three hitless innings.
Color analyst for CHSN.
When Stoney watches a game, he's going to call it like he sees it. Look who is pinch hitting at the plate. Former White Sox, Jan Moncada, makes his first appearance in an Angels uniform. They are familiar faces. Not as kind of a reception as Tim Anderson received.
Well, number one, he wasn't here quite as long or near as effective as Tim was. Steve Stone with Rahimi Harrison-Groney on 104.3 The Score.
Love a little Black Sabbath to introduce our next guest, Steve Stone. You know him well, the TV analyst for the White Sox games on CHSN, the Cy Young winner, all-star, and he's at Steve Stone on X. Stoney, how are you?
Good, Layla. How are you?
Good. So I'm glad we brought you with this music because I heard the conversation that you and John Triffin had about walk-up songs. And as I recall, you said hard rock all the way, didn't you?
Yes, I did. And in fact... Back in the day at Wrigley Field, we had both Ozzy and Sharon in the booth, and Ozzy really butchered Take Me Out to the Ballgame. However, that was really just an act because he had the words right in front of him, and this was a professional singer who could have easily sung it if he wanted to. The fans went crazy, and they happened to be, and this is no exaggeration, they were the nicest couple we ever had in the booth. They went around to everybody who was in the booth and thanked them for everything for letting them come up. I mean, they were just gracious. They were wonderful people.
Well, it's interesting that you bring that up because you know that that moment has gone on in lore. I mean, it's taken on a life of its own, that video clip.
Yeah, well, I was very fortunate at the time. And I think they're probably still doing it. We brought some great people in to take me out to the ballgame, the seventh inning stretch. And so I got to meet people that I never would have anyplace else. And it was the whole experience that I had – In the years that I worked there, the good moments were like 98% of the time to the 2% where it got a little tough.
Steve, I'm curious as to your reaction to seeing Munataka Murakami go down, but the offense rolls on. Even after a loss last night, they put up some runs, and it seems like Colson Montgomery and Miguel Vargas, and really everybody down the road, is just chipping in to make up for the absence of a guy who was having an historic season before he went down.
Well, certainly it's a huge loss, but the game of baseball is an everyday game, and you play it for six months. 162 games, you really separate the men from the boys, and when you win a division over 162, there's no mistakes, there's no illusions, you are the best team in that division. Now, a short series, anything can happen, and we've seen that, but it's the next man up, and it's not who's gone, it's not who you can't use, it's who you are using, and this team is pulled together and fought their way through a lot of tough situations. They lead the major leagues in comeback victories, which will show you some of their resilience. But sure, they miss Monet. There's no doubt about that. But, you know, baseball is a game where you just have to play through the injuries.
You hope it's not to your better players. But in this case, it was to a guy that was standing on the verge of a historic season for a rookie.
We're talking to Steve Stone, White Sox analyst here on Rahimi Harris and Grody on 104.3 The Score. And Stoney, I think what's been encouraging, too, is just being able to lose Mune and with the lineup producing around him in the way they are, not seeing a drop off, even though the protection may not be as consistent. Other people contributing. You know, we see Andrew Benintendi with a really nice game last night with the home run as well. So what do you think about just everybody else being able to just pick up where they left off in this?
