So today we're joined by Rafe Hassel, a former MI6 intelligence asset, whistleblower, who says he was subjected to covert human experimentation during his work with British intelligence. Yeah. So, Rafe, I mean, I just maybe get your response to the news that we've just learned, obviously, about James Woolsey, the head of the CIA and the family's claims of Havana syndrome.
Well, I take those claims extremely seriously and I think they're likely true. He wouldn't be the first very senior intelligence officer to have succumbed to illnesses that have been claimed to be associated with Havana syndrome. The whole concept or practice of so-called microwave diplomacy since the 1970s has been had fallout, it has had casualties ranging from very high ranking intelligence and State Department officials working in that case in Russia. They came down with leukemia and they have maintained, although it was never fully accepted, that this was to do with exposure to microwave radiation while in post. I think what has happened now is that, well, we have a claim from a very senior member of the intelligence establishment who has now unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.
And, you know, it's a continuation of the same trend. And I think there is no reason, or certainly I don't have any reason to doubt that claim at all. Jesse, your thoughts?
Yeah, well, this is really, really front and center right now. Obviously, I've been covering this topic since 2010, and our U.S. government has denied that this affliction, Havana syndrome, AHIs, back then in 2010, we called it electronic terrorism. They are denying that this is happening to United States civilians. They're only claiming that this is happening to federal employees and their family members. But they have to remember that their family members are civilians as well. They are now offering compensation. I think over $3 million has been paid out now to Havana Syndrome federal employees who had claims that they've been afflicted by this. But the bigger story here is, you know, who's doing it?
