Have you ever just sat in your van at the end of a long, hard day and thought to yourself, do you know what? I just can't keep doing this. Have you ever pulled up outside your house and then you've sat on your driveway for five minutes because you didn't want to take all that stress through that front door? Or have you ever sat, looked at your bank account, looked at your workload, looked at your staff, looked at your customers, looked at your inbox and just thought, How much more can I take of this? Have you ever wondered whether it'd be just easier just so and get a job? To turn up at eight o'clock, get your tools out, finish at five, go home, switch off, get paid every Friday and let somebody else have all that worry, stress and problems.
Because if you have, I'm telling you now, you're not alone. And if I'm being completely honest with ya, in them early years of me building, growing and scaling my trades. business, my join room building company, I tell you what, I had the thought over and over again. Now, before anybody starts thinking, hang on a minute, Craig, you know, you've built these successful businesses, you've coached 30 plus thousand people, you know, you've got successful companies and a successful life. Listen, let me tell you something. Success doesn't stop you from having those thoughts. In fact, some of the most successful business owners that I know have these thoughts more than once. You see, what people don't understand about running a trades business is that it's absolutely relentless.
It never ever stops. There isn't a day that goes by where there isn't a problem that needs solving. A customer's complaining, a member of staff's got an issue, a supplier problem, a cash flow problem, you ain't got enough money to pay your tax below your VAT, you've answered. broke down or your van's been broken into, somebody's left a one-star bad review for something ridiculous. There's always something that needs your attention. Most trades business owners don't wake up exhausted because they're lazy. They wake up exhausted because they're carrying the weight of everybody else's problems on the shoulders and have been for years. They've got the customers' problems, they've got the staff's problems, they've got the supplier problems, they've got the family problems, they've got their own problems, and eventually that weight starts to take its toll.
And what I find fascinating is how little people talk about this. You see, in business, we're all about talking about turnover and profit and how many vans we've got. We've just moved into new offices. We're growing as business. But we don't talk about the nights where we can't sleep because we're laid awake at three o'clock looking up at the ceiling with cogs turning and as much.
