I actually really like the fact that we can only ever see one side of the moon. Like constantly there is just one side that is locked to our view and that you have this dark side of the moon. It adds a layer of mystery to an already a very mysterious object that hangs in the night sky. I remember the first time that I learned that we only ever look at one face of the moon. I think it took me a while to wrap my head around it, because of course, when you look at the moon day to day, you can see it waxing and waning, which I suppose in a way creates the illusion that it is rotating. But of course that waxing and waning is to do with the movement of the earth relative to the sun. And I can't remember when it was that I first learned that, but...

I think it must have given me, I won't say an appreciation of the moon. I don't think I began to appreciate things like that. I really appreciated it until I was much older. But you ever have these experiences in life where you sort of suddenly start to realize things that have been in the tapestry of your life. Things that you've taken for granted are suddenly much more real. They feel more tangible. I've had several experiences like that in my life, I think, relating to the moon specifically because it is quite hard to think about it as a real thing when it sits in the sky looming over us I mean it's a beautiful thing to admire but I think you really have to spend some time with it and have some very particular thoughts to move it away from this almost illusory, ephemeral object into a true belief, dare I say, that it is in fact

A heavenly body, this huge rock in the space, in the sky above us. Something that if you travelled far enough and long enough, you could in fact touch with your bare hands. Of course, we all know this intellectually, but it's very difficult to feel to be real unless you have very particular moments of clarity in that direction. Which, as I say, I think I've had a few in my life, poignant ones. Hello, by the way. My name's Andrew and today I'm going to be talking about the moon. I've always found the moon quite a relaxing companion in the sky at night.
