What were the highlights of the weekend's PGA Tour results?
This episode of the Sky Sports Golf Podcast is brought to you by Quantum Irons from Callaway.
Champion golfer of the year, Scotty Scheffler.
Hello and welcome to the Sky Sports Golf Podcast brought to you by Callaway. It is major championship week once again. All the world's best descending on Aronamink for the PGA Championship. Our very own PGA champion, the one and only Rich Beam, will be joining me from Philly to look ahead to that one. Norway have another winner on the PGA Tour, but it's not Victor Hovland. A strange Truist Championship produces an unlikely winner. Remember how we spent much of last year discussing whether a US captain should pick himself after winning on tour? Well, it's only happened again. And history made in Catalonia with a 14-shot victory on the DP World Tour. And in the absence of the world number one, the world number two wins on the LPGA Tour.
Delighted to say I'm joined by Rob Lee. Good morning to you, Rob.
How are you doing?
How did Kristoffer Reitan achieve his first PGA Tour win?
Good morning. Yeah, in good form. Looking forward to, obviously, second major of the year this week. So, yeah, fairly stoked for that.
Yes, we will have another winner this weekend joining us both very shortly. But we will start by talking about Christopher Wrighton, a PGA Tour winner after coming out on top at Quail Hollow in what was a curious signature event with some of the bigger, more household names stuttering, maybe with one eye on this week and some more unlikely names up at the pointy end of the leaderboard. But firstly, Rob. Hats off to our champion. Here's a guy who's actually been around for a while, 28 years of age, but claimed one of 10 PGA Tour cards through the DP World Tour last season, began the week as an alternate for this tournament, gets his place in the tournament, finds himself in the last group on Sunday and plays his last 12 holes bogey-free in three under par to snatch it.
Do you know the great thing for Christopher Raitan is how he closed it out, and he closed it out on a major championship-quality golf course. It's a tough test, Quail Hollow. Coming down that stretch, they keep calling it the Green Mile, but it doesn't give you anything at the end, and Raitan hit... the most magnificent tee shot at a potential card rack at the 17th. And then at 18, everyone's going, oh, he's got to leave, maybe he should hit the three-wood. He just rifled the driver straight down the middle of the fairway, eight times centre of the green.
What challenges has Chris Wood faced in recent years?
Two parts later, he wins his first big breakthrough win on the PGA Tour. And it's a signature event. And he's playing the PGA. And he's opened up so many more doors going forward now on the PGA Tour. That's the thing. All right, the money's great. $3.5 million, whatever it is, that's great. I don't think the family struggles for money, by the way, the right hands. I think they're okay.
No. He's the grandson of basically like a sort of grocery magnate or something.
Yeah, there is, yeah. There's entrepreneurial quality in the family, and he's in the line. I suspect when things are divvied up, he's going to be okay. But, you know, he's saying, I'm going to make my own way in this world, and
What insights does Chris Wood share about rediscovering his love for golf?
check him over three and a half million dollars you know a signature event it's a big deal and he should be very proud of himself the way he won particularly on the tough golf course that's what you look for when you're wondering if a guy can press on I know he chips cross-handed that's a little foible but you know one of the world's top players chips cross-handed Matt Fitzpatrick so it's becoming a bit like back in my day if you saw someone just cross-handed putting left below right if you saw that yeah You're going, ooh, he's got problems. He's got problems. That was the view. And it used to be because Vijay Singh went cross-handed. Peter Sini was the first guy I ever saw chip cross-handed. That was because of problems.
Now, Matt Fitzpatrick chips cross-handed because he chips better that way. And right-hand chips cross-handed. And it's becoming less of a taboo look. It's becoming more normalized.
