welcome to the sky sports euro 2016 podcast right it is the sky sports euro 2016 podcast episode two we record this at the the england media hotel here in chantilly i'm andy burton i've got our chief football reporter nick collins alongside me again for episode two and we're going to talk all things euro 2016 of course in the next half an hour or so We'll be hearing from our reporters who are with Wales, with Northern Ireland and the Republic as well. We'll also try and get something from Gary Cottrell, who's out with Belgium today. But before we do all of that, big news today coming from UEFA regarding sanctions on the Russia team. For an update on this, we can go to our chief news reporter, Kave Solikol, to bring us up to date.
I'm just at a news conference in Lille where the police here have announced some new measures surrounding the game between England and Wales on Thursday in Lons. Of course Russia playing Slovakia in Lille which is just about a half an hour drive away from Lons and the police have announced after quite a long meeting this afternoon that they're going to introduce an alcohol ban in Lille and Lons from 6 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. on Friday morning.
What sanctions were imposed on the Russian team by UEFA?
What that means is that you will not be able to buy any alcohol from shops, supermarkets, petrol stations, off licenses. and there's also a ban on drinking in public you will be able to drink indoors in bars or restaurants but those bars and restaurants will all have to close by midnight and all drinks including soft drinks are going to be served in plastic containers Now these measures are aimed at making sure that we don't have a repeat of the scenes which we saw in Marseille both in and outside the stadium. Regarding the scenes inside the stadium and what that means for Russia, well UEFA today decided to punish Russia by giving them a £120,000 fine. which I think is going to be a small change.
That's not going to have much effect on the Russian football union. But then also they're going to have this suspended disqualification. Now, what that means is if they have a repeat of the scenes we saw inside the Stadvalodrome, then UEFA can throw and will throw, so they say, Russia out of this tournament. As to what's happening on the ground in Lille, well, it's pretty quiet. Russian supporters are here. They're keeping a very low profile, not wearing their team's jerseys. Also, England supporters here, again, they are keeping a low profile, not really playing. out in their shirts, not really in the square drinking. But just in the past hour or so, lots of Welsh fans have been arriving at the train station here.
They're proudly wearing their colours, drinking and singing. So the police here will be hoping that these measures that they've put in place will ensure that everything goes smoothly, everything goes quietly, and we don't have any problems between fans of England and Russia and also the Welsh fans who've arrived in town.
Right, so there, Kaveh, with the news that there is a €150,000 fine going Russia's way and a suspended disqualification from the competition. Nick Collins, our chief football reporter, is here. Nick, let's hope that that message gets through, be it via the Russian Federation, even the Russian government, whatever it takes to get through to these Russian hooligans here, that their team will be disqualified from the tournament if these scenes continue. Hopefully, Nick, that will be enough to try and bring an end to the scenes that we've seen in the last few days.
Yeah, they weren't great, were they, Andy, at all? This sanction, of course, just applies to the behaviour of the Russian fans inside the stadium as opposed to anywhere else. So we'll await with interest to see if it does have any effect or not. But it doesn't seem that much, does it?

Yeah, hopefully the threat of being disqualified from the tournament will sort of hit home with those guys. What we want to do on this podcast though, because there has been so much positive stuff to talk about in terms of football, we want to focus on some of that.
