How did Ryan Fox describe his first moments after winning The Open?

Jeremy Wells 0:01
So he's had a few days for this to sink in now. He has it!
Manaia Stewart 0:11
Ryan Fox, champion golfer of the year. He celebrates, and far away in New Zealand celebrates with him. What a finish, what a way to take it. The stuff that dreams are made of. And Ryan Fox, friend of the show, joins us now. Firstly, Ryan, from all of us, congratulations. A better person couldn't have won.
Ryan Fox 0:34
Well, thank you, boys. That's very nice of you to say, and I honestly still don't quite have words for it. It still doesn't feel real. I catch myself in the shower just for a little bit of a moment to myself and trying to just go, what the hell? What the hell? Something else about being a major champion pops in my head randomly and I'm like, I didn't think about that. Well, like, oh, damn. Like, yes. I think I'll be having that for a long time.
Jeremy Wells 1:03
I think even just watching it, I know I've heard you talk about it since, but like I was watching it here in the studio and I was just like, who's going to win the bloody? And then you won. Who's won the bloody? And it's so, I don't know, because I feel like it's such a big thing that it doesn't even, it doesn't feel real. It doesn't. Is that how it feels for you? It's like, I don't even know what the hell this is.
Ryan Fox 1:25
yeah like it almost feels like an out-of-body experience a little bit like I was there but I wasn't in control it just kind of happened it's like yeah I don't know how else to describe it really it's just like I felt I didn't know how I was going to feel I didn't know how I was going to play in that circumstance and I'm not sure I ever thought it was going to be like that
Jeremy Wells 1:49
Is it like, so, you know, when kids are shooting around in the backyard shooting basketball, they're counting down three, two, one for the NBA championship. I imagine that's basically the same thing with golf, the putt to win a major. Had you thought about that moment before and did it feel like that when it was happening?
Ryan Fox 2:08
I mean, I had, but it's not even close. Like, you can't replicate what you feel. Like, well, I can't definitely, you know. I've had putts to win tournaments before, obviously, and felt a little bit like that. But if you go back, the putt to win at Wentworth that I hold a few years ago, My hands weren't shaking. I felt pretty comfortable over that. There is nothing comfortable about how I felt on that 18th green, and I have absolutely no idea how I hit that puck. You didn't look like it was. I was an absolute mess in the inside. Well, in that situation. I was Jerry on the first tee at Shaftesbury.
Manaia Stewart 2:54
The thing about that, though, is what's the worst that can happen with a putt? I don't know with a putt. You know, you're not going to – as a professional golfer, you're not going to – I mean, I've duffed a couple of putts, but you're not going to chunk it, if you know what I mean.
Ryan Fox 3:08
No, but it's like – it's almost – obviously, you've got a bigger miss with a full shot, right? Like, disaster can happen, but it's a whole lot easier to control your big muscles when – It's like when you're nervous, like it becomes like a full swing, especially when you're playing well, like you just, it feels more routine almost. Like you just go pick a target, hit it and just let the body do what it's supposed to do. Like chipping and putting when it's like that, like it's small movements. It's kind of a small muscles that are doing a little bit of it. And like, that's when shit gets twitchy.
Yeah.
Ryan Fox 3:46
Like, like obviously where I was disaster wasn't going to happen in terms of, um, like a big mess, but I could have easily, like you can gun a 12 foot or three foot by if you get excited. And when you can't feel your hands and everything's going, like it's pretty easy to get excited like that. And yeah, I just tried to hit a good, good putt, try to hit good speed, took a couple of deep breaths and then, you know, kind of look up with like three foot to go. And it was like,

What was Ryan’s emotional experience standing over the final putt on the 18th?

Ryan Fox 4:17
oh shit, this has a chance, and then it snuck in that left edge and went in and I kind of blacked out for a little bit there.
Manaia Stewart 4:24
I mean, for people that don't know you, Ryan, personally, you're a humble person, you're an unassuming person, you're a person who has time for everybody.
