What's up, gentlemen? Great to see you. Great to be back. It's been a minute. I don't know what the word summer means.
There is
no NBA summer this time around. I've been covering the league in some capacity since 04, and I might have recency bias, but I think this takes the cake in terms of busiest NBA summer of them all.
What is the overall impact of the NBA’s punishment on the Clippers?
We have squeezed in a little bit of downtime, but we've been rolling.
August and September usually is the downtime. It's like, you know, spring break or whatever for, for us media folks, but it has not been the case because of the LA Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers. James dragging out,
you know, his free agency. I mean, you know, That's his right. But, man, it has been one of these summers where we've had
this. Don't leave Ben out of the mix here.
Well, don't worry. We are not going to leave out Ben Simmons. We're going to ask you all about him. But first, look, let's jump in on this Clippers stuff. We're recording this on Friday. It's coming out Monday, the 7th, Labor Day. Happy Labor Day, everybody. The latest is that the league has dealt out one of the harshest punishments in NBA, maybe even sports history, to a team. Five lost draft picks, a year suspension for Steve Ballmer, six months for Lawrence Frank. First, I just want your take on this whole thing. I mean, you've also been doing reporting on this for the last year. How do you feel about how the league has responded to the Wachtel-Lipton report?
Yeah, I mean, incredibly fascinating stuff. I mean, the 35-page, 36-page report is just as compelling a read as you're going to find in this NBA space. And honestly, written in a way that it kind of just really takes you through it. As far as the punishment, I mean, first of all, it was hard to figure out how to react immediately because... the league had done such a good job of keeping the reality of the situation quiet. So there were times when you started almost programming yourself to assume that they were not going to come down hard on anybody. Um, and then obviously when, you know, there was a report recently indicating that, that it was headed that direction. You're, you're looking into that and trying to figure out, are we missing the mark here?
Um, so all things considered, I would say they absolutely came down very hard on the Clippers and, um, You know, you're talking about five first is a massive price to pay. You know, the year suspension for Ballmer, six months for Lawrence. And I'm sure we'll get into it. But like, you know, for the NBA casual fans like, you know, meet Gillian Zucker, who is a Clippers executive who you have never heard of. And whose name, as our writer Dan Wojcicki pointed out recently, his name, her name pops up in that report more times, I think 52, than Lawrence Frank and Steve Ballmer combined. And

NBA absolutely decided that this woman, this longtime Clippers executive president of business operations, was the most to blame when it comes to all of these accusations that they found to be true. And then certainly Steve Ballmer
