What separates photographers who stay hobbyists from the ones who actually build real careers? Let me tell you, it's not gear. It's selflessness. It's not experience. It's observation. It's not luck that separates amateurs from pros. It's research. It's how they think. Sadly, sadly, photography is full of egos. It's about how good you think you are. about how much you love your photographs. Photography has three levels. Okay. And I want you to really lock this in. Most photographers never make it past level one. Okay.
How do the three photography levels (reactive, pre‑visualized, client‑pressure) differ?
By the end of this, you're gonna know exactly where you are within these three levels of photography. So level one. Level one is Mm-hmm. Taking pictures. These are like uh when you're surfing, like the baby waves, you know, the ones that break on the beach. Super em easy. Taking pictures, there's no risk, but here's the problem. Is that you're capturing You're not creating. And this is exactly where all photographers begin. Okay, so don't feel bad if you're in this place right now. But I'm definitely gonna help you get out of it. So exactly where most photographers begin. You walk around, you see something interesting, you squeeze a frame. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but there's no real intention behind any of the photography that you're capturing.
And there's no repeatable process, no clear reason. Behind why you're taking that picture of the pigeon, the seagull, the car on the street, the person walking. In today's world, it's dangerous to shoot without a reason because now. Everybody Is making decent pictures with an iPhone. They're making pretty decent pictures right now. Phones make pretty decent pictures. So reacting to what's in front of you with a pro camera. When there's people who have iPhone eighteens and iPhone seventeens and and they're out there also shooting. And posting to Instagram more than you are. So reacting to what's in front of you. Is no longer enough. And the issue at this level is inconsistency. This is the issue for most photographers who are
Pointing at things they see and shooting. One day you make something strong, the next day nothing. And you really have no idea why this is a strong image and this one isn't. So the turning point for photographers who are in level one is seeing, seeing photographs versus observing. This is where everything changes. You realize professional photographers can stand in the exact same spot that you are and see completely different images and make something visually that has commercial appeal that for you like you missed it. And why is that? By the way, because they aren't just seeing, they're observing, they're studying light, they're studying patterns, they're studying emotion and and backgrounds and and timing and opportunity.
That's when the question changes from do I like this to why does this work? Why does this photograph work? And that's the beginning of growth as a photographer. When you start asking yourself why something that you're shooting is working, and it really helps if you have somebody external that's ahead of you, 36 years ahead of you, that can tell you what's working and what's not. So level two, level two, this is where this is.
Why do most photographers get stuck at Level 1 and how can you recognize it?
the beginning of everything for photographers is graduating from level one Which is taking pictures of what you see to level two, which is executing ideas for yourself. And as a a surfing analogy, this now means that you're going out. You're going out past that first break and you're trying to actually get to deeper water. So This is the beach, and there's that first wave that breaks on the beach. This is level one. But then there's the bigger waves that you have to pass. That you have to pass level one to actually get to. Level two. This is deeper water. And you have to be you have to graduate past level one to get into the realm where you can even see.
