Welcome to the Don Lemon Show. You know, the thumbs, hit the thumbs up, the algorithm, all of that. So thanks for joining us this morning. We wake up in New York to a shocker. For some, not everybody. Zoran Mamdani, a little-known state lawmaker whose progressive platform and campaign trail charisma, or as one of my next guests says, his aura or his riz, electrified younger voters, stunned the former governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, in the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City on Tuesday night, building a lead so commanding that Cuomo...
Cuomo actually conceded, said, you know what? I got to give it to the young man. He did it. Mr. Ramdani is only 33 years old. He's a Democratic socialist from Queens. He tapped into a current of anxiety around New York City's growing affordability crisis. His joyful campaign brought new voters into the fold who rejected the scandal-scarred Mr. Cuomo. his ominous characterizations of the city and embraced an economic platform that included everything from free bus service and childcare to publicly owned grocery stores. So here with me to discuss all of that is a pair of phenomenal guests, Mr. Errol Lewis, who is just a king of everything political in New York City. He is a veteran. journalist, the political anchor of Spectrum News.

Good morning. Okay, show of hands. Anybody shocked by this? Clay? Clay? All right, Clay, we'll get to that. Clay's the one who was shocked by this. I am not shocked by this. This is the New York Times is saying Mamdani stuns Cuomo in New York City mayoral primary. The New York Times says Democratic primary. We have the breakdown of all this. But first, Errol. You were up late covering this. Maybe not as late as one would have thought because I think the results came in pretty early considering this ranked choice thing. And then I want to talk to you about some other things, specifically when you mentioned Henry's.
And I found that fascinating. Errol Lewis first. What's your assessment, sir?
Yes, yes. Henry's is real estate slang. I got this from a real estate broker for highly educated, not rich yet. And there's a lot of them. And Zoran Mamdani is one of them, frankly. This is somebody whose mother is a filmmaker, father is a professor. He himself had sort of kicked around and done a little of this and a little of that. He was a foreclosure prevention specialist before getting himself elected to the assembly. But he also was highly educated. This is somebody who went to Bronx Science. He was a very smart guy. And like a lot of young people here in New York, kind of waiting for his life to begin. And he very closely identifies with a lot of these young Henrys who are finding that the cost of living is absolutely crushing them.
And this was a message that they weren't really getting much progress on from a lot of the incumbents. And so he gathered them up. He became their leader. He fired them up. He put them in the street. They knocked on doors. And the rest is history, which is what we saw made yesterday when the vote tallies came in.
Is it a stunner, you think? Because, I mean, if you've been in New York City for the last few weeks, you're like, eh, looks like this guy's going to win.
Well, you know, it is stunning because any way you look at it, look, when the first poll came out in February, he was polling at 1%, Don. Nobody knew who Zoran Mamdani was. 1%. To go from there to where he ended up in the high 40% and to topple somebody who's part of a political dynasty in basically less than six months, that's stunning.
