So, Congressman, did you see the reporting this week that there apparently there's a power struggle happening within the Homeland Security Department? Tom Holman is apparently beefing with Kristi Noem. Holman wants to prioritize the deportations of violent criminals. Kristi Noem and I think Corey Lewandowski, according to the reporting, that they want to target everyone, even if they're anyone who is undocumented. What do you say to that? What's going on?
Well, first, I mean, none of them should be running DHS or this operation, to be clear. I mean, Tom Holman has some really, I think, deep ethical issues, as we know. And Kristi Noem has been running that department to the ground and causing incredible harm to not just immigrants, but also U.S. citizens. We had 170 U.S. citizens that have actually been detained and held captive. some for days without explanation or access to anyone by ICE and by DHS. Look, we don't know exactly what's happening right now. We know that there is some infighting. What's more important, whether it's Kristi Noem or Holman or anyone at that department, the whole thing has denied people in this country, whether they are citizens or non-citizens, of their due process rights.
And the Constitution is very clear that all persons have due process in this country. With the images that you're seeing of officers throwing people to the ground, detaining people without any explanation, going after folks and working people at places like car washes or restaurants is crazy. And I've been saying to a few friends, I know a couple people that voted for Trump that I would still talk to, and they've been saying to me in the last few days, this is not what I voted for. I didn't know this was gonna happen. This has gone way beyond what I thought.
you know which is uh an interesting opinion i think but i'm glad that some people are finally seeing the light you know i agree with you look we'll take i said anyone who comes to the the right side of the bright side um you know i'll take them but is it what you voted for yes maybe it's just gone as you said in your in your last answer maybe it's just gone further than they thought it was going to go but i mean to most of us that was not a surprise representative
I agree. You know, I saw one message from someone I know pretty well, very conservative person in my community that posted about their gardener actually had gotten, who was a legal resident, got picked up by ICE, detained for days without access to anyone. They had no idea where he was. And he's posting about how this is not what he wanted and he apologized to him. And part of me, exactly like you said, is like, well, this is, Donald Trump did promise to do a lot of this. But I think to the extent, I think people are surprised to think of the inhumanity that they're actually now seeing on the footage. And I'm hoping that people realize that this was the plan all along. And right now they are targeting by race and ethnicity, people that basically look like me,
and targeting them for either deportation or some kind of detention without any sort of access to their rights or to a lawyer or to their family even.
Yeah. And look, we've seen people, obviously, as you said, who look like you get swept up and they are citizens, either born here or naturalized citizens. We've seen African-Americans getting swept up, people who are legal U.S. citizens. I'm wondering, you know, if someone comes to your door, they won't give you any identification. There's no warrant, no signed warrant, no probable cause. I am wondering. What people should do when they're in these situations.
How widespread are reports of U.S. citizens being detained by ICE without due process?
And I'm also wondering what is going to happen. What's going to be the repercussions for these guys? I had Rick Wilson on the other day who said, look, this should be similar to the Nuremberg trials. If you are violating people's basic human rights, then there should be some sort of consequences for that. I'm not sure if you agree with that.
