Oh, I like that. Oh, I like that. I'm pleased to be speaking with you. And it's been a long time. Look, and a lot of things have changed since we've all spoken. But I want to ask you, thank you. First of all, thanks for joining. Let me ask you about what's going on. You've heard this big, beautiful bill, right? So Jamal, you've watched the so-called Big Beautiful Build unfold from outside. Billions for border militarization, cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, and tech CEOs getting the mic while working families get the boot.
What are you seeing and feeling as the Congress tries to sell austerity as patriotism?
Yeah, I mean, it's the continuation of the Project 2025 agenda. It's manifesting in a variety of ways, cuts to DEI, mass deportations, disappearing people. And now this bill is just the continuation of that. And of course, they have to cut Medicaid, right, because they have to fund the wealthiest Americans. to give them more power and more control over our democracy. And so it's the continued degradation of what is supposed to be a democracy that works for everyone and working class people, and it's not. And so I was happy to see some Republicans say no initially, but I think they are probably going to fall in line and move this bill forward.
Well, the Freedom Caucus, I don't know if you guys know the latest, the Freedom Caucus has stood up and they pretty much said, stop this. And they're going over to the White House. I mean, Corey, former representative, do you, does that give you any sort of hope? What does that tell you having been a part of some of these negotiations?
How is the "Big Beautiful Build" bill reshaping funding priorities in Congress?
I mean, it says that they're going to go talk to him. But the thing is, one thing we all know is whoever has, at least what I've seen, is whoever has Donald Trump's ear at the moment, you know, that's, you know, he'll go that way. And so the Freedom Caucus meeting, are they going to meet actually with Donald Trump or are they meeting with, you know, with his chief advisors or... And then what happens with that? Because we've seen it go both ways. We've seen it where the Freedom Caucus, where they're actually able to stop bills from coming to the floor and really disrupt. And we've seen it to where they just start to fall in line. So it'll be, we'll see who pulls the levers. Will it be Donald Trump's
You know, saying, do what I said, or will it be the Freedom Caucus saying, no, you know, you need to hear us. So but the thing is, what are the what how much are Democrats pushing back or how much are we pushing back? How much are we saying? You know, how loud are we? Because that's the other thing. Like, we have to be the loudest people in the room. And I just I don't know that that's happening. We're talking about Medicaid. We're talking about, you know, well, and one thing that I've seen is, you know, Republicans talking about, oh, you know, this is going to help those who are working for tips. This is going to help, you know, this is going to put extra money in people's pockets, you know, you know, a few hundred dollars or a thousand dollars in people's pockets.
But who are those folks when what you're talking about is giving all of this money to people who are already wealthy? And so, oh, we're supposed to take these crumbs.
Why do Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman say the bill represents "Project 2025" policies?
Again, give crumbs to a few of the regular everyday people and continue to make billionaires richer.
Well, I mean, is it good? Do you think it's good at least that they're holding it up, that they're trying to stand up for something? Yes.
They have to. They have to. But, you know, I'm glad that they're standing up. Like, it's got to be both teams. Both teams need to need to be fighting the same way. And I'm not saying Democrats are not fighting. But what I'm saying is if they're if the Freedom Caucus is going to go meet with the president or the White House, at least, you know, Democrats like let's get that same let's get that same energy, you know, and can we.
