We start with some breaking news, and I want to get right to the folks who are going to help me with that breaking news, and that is none other than Charles Coleman.
He's an MSNBC legal analyst, a former prosecutor, and a civil rights attorney. Joining us, if not now, Monique Presley is a legal analyst, a political commentator, a trial attorney, and a dear friend of the Don Lemon Show. And Dina Dahl is with us as well, an attorney, legal analyst, and the host of the Midas on the Midas Touch Network. So we're going to start with Charles. Charles, the news that came in is this. The Attorney General of New York, Letitia James, has been indicted. A grand jury has indicted her on a fraud charge in the latest Justice Department case against a perceived enemy of President Donald Trump. What the hell is going on, Charles?
So, Don, I don't want to underplay the significance of this because it is a federal indictment. But in the long run, I feel like this is much ado about nothing. This case involves questions around paperwork pertaining to a vacation house for a house in Newport. Virginia, that Letitia James essentially sort of helped to co-sign on for her niece. The issue in question is the loan that she was able, her niece was able to secure because one part of the paperwork apparently mistakenly indicated that this would be Letitia James's primary residence, which if you don't know, when you're buying a home that can sometimes get you a better rate or more favorable terms. Leticia James actually wrote the lender to inform them that, in fact, this would not be the primary residence.
And there's other paperwork to substantiate that as well. And this is an investigation that the Department of Justice has been undergoing since May of this year. There was an investigator on this case who said they wanted no parts of it because there wasn't anything substantive there. The previous U.S. attorney who was in this office before Halligan, who bought this indictment, also stepped down because he resisted not only this indictment, but also the filing of the James Comey indictment because he did not feel that there was probable cause enough in this case. So it's hard not to look at this, Don, as being anything other than political retribution by Donald Trump forced through the Department of Justice on his enemies.
Then why on earth
I guess I'm asking a question that's logical for someone that is someone and an administration that's not logical. Why would anyone... Do you expect this to be thrown out? Is it even going to make it to trial?
I don't know that it will be thrown out. I mean, I think that, unfortunately, this is an area of Donald Trump's sort of repertoire that he's taken very personally.
