I hope that you enjoyed your weekend. And it turned out that there was a lot of news, not a little news. There was a lot of news. But you've missed a lot if you haven't joined us. If you didn't join us this morning for the Hot Topics at 10 a.m., you missed a lot. And we have a lot to talk about, including some breaking news. Donald Trump ramped up his rhetoric up to 11, maybe up to 15. You know how he said he wanted to dial it back down, that we needed to be careful about our rhetoric. Well, he's gone the complete opposite way. Obviously, he previously blamed it on Democrats.
And let's see what he said to see if he's actually doing what he says. In just one rally on Sunday, he accused Vice President Harris of being, quote, mentally disabled. He claimed that Hispanic migrants were breaking into people's homes and, quote, slitting their throats and even endorsed a new law enforcement strategy that is literally the plot of the movie The Purge. And as they had been calling it, all day on the news networks that Donald Trump went full racist this weekend with his rhetoric on migrants, okay? So we have so much to discuss. Okay. Anna Marie Cox, just before we went on, we started streaming. You brought something up. And that's what I want to start with. I'm going to start with the breaking news, okay? A Georgia judge on Monday, meaning today, struck down the state's six-week abortion ban, ruling that the ban is unconstitutional and blocking it from being enforced. In a 26-page opinion, the Fulton County Superior Judge Robert McBurney ruled that the state's abortion laws must revert to what they were before the six-week ban, known as the LIFE Act, was passed in 2019, the ban was blocked as, my glasses are so dirty, was blocked as long as Roe v. Wade was the law of the land, but went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe in 2022.
So abortions are now legal in Georgia up until about 22 weeks of pregnancy. What do you say, Ana Marie Cox, to the breaking news?
Well, it is nice to find what I consider to be a bright spot in considering the news that we've had in the world. You know, my heart and thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene. I think that's an important topic for us to hit on at some point. But this is something that seems like good news. And I think it is good news for those of us who believe in bodily autonomy. The judge's opinion is a really fun one to read. He talks about Handmaid's Tale, always a big hit with those of us warning about that coming to pass. Unfortunately, it does mean legally it's probably just a little bit more of the ping pong game. that the two sides are playing in court right now.
What do you mean by that?
They're just raising each other to sue until we get some kind of, you know, encapsulate, you know, until we can codify Roe, until states are able to enact protections for abortion, it's still going to be something that's fought at, you know, in state to state to state to state, and it really relies also on the judges that have, who's appointed the judges that are hearing the case, right? Now, I think the news that Democrats could find out of this that's good is it keeps it in the headlines. It just keeps people talking about this. It reminds people of the stakes. You all probably remember the reporting that was done, I think a week ago, a week and a half ago about a woman that died in Georgia because she was denied care under the law that was in place in Georgia.
