Kayla 1:22
Doing pretty good. How about you?
Dr. John Delony 1:23
Excellent. I'm doing great. What's up in your world?
Kayla 1:27
Sure. So my question for you is, how do I handle my boyfriend's female friend who excludes me in group settings?
Dr. John Delony 1:37
That whole sentence is strange. Tell me about this person you're dating.
Kayla 1:43
Sure. So my boyfriend and I have been together for two and a half years, and he recently bought a house about a year and a half ago. And he has been friends with this woman for about eight years. They met in college, and I can't seem to get along with her, and I'm not sure why she feels threatened by me. That's the impression that I've been kind of given, and him and I don't know how to navigate this.
Dr. John Delony 2:08
He has a choice to make. Does he want to lose you as his romantic partner, or does he want to keep this platonic friendship? Because it sounds like she's really immature.
Kayla 2:17
Yeah. We've confronted her about this, too, and when he asked her if she likes me or not, she couldn't really give a straight answer.
Dr. John Delony 2:27
Here's the thing, Kayla. She doesn't have to like you. There's not a rule that says she has to like you. The rule is, is your boyfriend going to honor... his girlfriend, the person who might become his wife one day, or is he going to keep placating to this kind of vampire-y other person, this friend? Because take the female part of it out. I had buddies that weren't super in favor of me dating my wife, and they're not my buddies. They get to choose. You know what I mean? And so, and I had other buddies be like, hey, man, are you sure she's the right person for you? Because she was so different than people I've dated in the past. And her friends for sure sat her down and were like, whoa, this guy's not super stable.
Dr. John Delony 3:17
And they were right. But like, so take the female part of it out. Like if it was just a dude friend, at the end of the day, he's got to decide, do I want to be with this guy who won't invite my girlfriend anyplace, keep snubbing her when we're in public or whatever? And so just the fact that it's a woman makes there like a little layer, an additional layer of tension, if you will. My question for you is like, why do you care so much about this other friend?
Kayla 3:45
Right.
Dr. John Delony 3:46
Why does it matter to you?
Kayla 3:48
Yeah, like I've asked him that before.
Dr. John Delony 3:50
No, no, I'm asking you.
Kayla 3:53
Um, I don't know. Like, I can't pinpoint it. I mean, I've tried, like, talking to her and... No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Dr. John Delony 4:03
Forget her. Why does it bother you so much that this stranger doesn't like you?
Kayla 4:09
Um, I guess I just want to be included in this group.
Dr. John Delony 4:14
And your boyfriend allows you to be excluded?
Kayla 4:16
Yeah, I mean, he never really did anything or, like... I mean, he confronted her, but that's pretty much the only thing that he did in terms of standing up for me.
Dr. John Delony 4:26
So, no... Your boyfriend sucks. Like, I... I mean, really?
Unknown 4:35
Yeah.
Dr. John Delony 4:39
Like, if I showed up somewhere and it was very clear that my girlfriend of two and a half years... Do y'all live together now?
