64.656 - 79.026 Neil Saavedra

Happy Saturday to you, Neil Saavedra, your friendly neighborhood fork reporter here on a gorgeous but hot Saturday afternoon, the Saturday before the Oscars. So this is our...

0

79.006 - 98.348 Neil Saavedra

Oscar show, really, because we did this last year and I think the year before, I think we started them with with the famed director, Kevin Smith, and he and I did Oscar Sundays once or twice and then kind of moved into this show. And so now we're doing that and you can't.

98.328 - 122.37 Neil Saavedra

But we've got food, great food, that actually does tie into the film industry as well because at least one of them, and I think both of them might be, have had films shot there. But we'll figure that out coming up. Plus, we'll have Michael Corey coming on from Props to History talking about props in films. You know I'm a big fan of all that craziness.

122.75 - 139.506 Neil Saavedra

Gives me an excuse to expose you to some really neat people and some fun facts. And another neat person. who is now part of the weekend lineup and always brings the love of film and the arts with her, Heather Brooker. Ladies and gentlemen, how are you, Heather?

139.621 - 142.446 Heather Brooker

I'm good. Happy Oscars Eve to you.

142.466 - 159.655 Neil Saavedra

Look at this. You know what? I'm so behind. I haven't even purchased my Oscar tree. I haven't done any of my Oscar gift purchases. It's just gotten so commercial for me that I want to go back to its religious roots.

Chapter 2: What food ideas are perfect for an Oscar watch party?

313.398 - 337.787 Neil Saavedra

Weapons is not a great film. It's a popcorn film, but has a fantastic, a couple of fantastic acting roles that were squeezed for everything they were worth. You know, regardless of what was on the page, they were played in a way that were fun. Sinners was absolutely fantastic.

0

337.767 - 363.859 Neil Saavedra

just awe-inspiring gorgeous and from a theological perspective um which you know obviously is something a favorite of mine and all of the different it was just beautiful and uh i really loved that and i would put uh frankenstein in a similar category as if it was just some great performances and uh

0

363.839 - 387.687 Neil Saavedra

beautiful to look at and intricate and otherworldly and took me to a place that was really fun for me. But that's that's where I stop. Where what are the what are the movies that that stood out to you? What do you think are the sleepers or the ones that people should see that maybe didn't have the sexy forward push marketing wise or things like that?

0

387.667 - 407.177 Heather Brooker

Well, I mean, I totally agree with you, first of all, about Sinners and Frankenstein, you know, two very different directors and Ryan Coogler, who directed Sinners and Guillermo del Toro, who directed Frankenstein. Very different, both incredible visionaries in their directing. So I love that you saw those two.

0

407.157 - 434.515 Heather Brooker

If anybody is going to watch any movies tonight and they haven't seen anything yet or they're behind or maybe they want to try to squeeze one more in before the big show, I recommend Train Dreams was one that I really, really loved. It's not getting a lot of love, not getting a lot of attention. It's a very filmmaker-y film. It's got a slower pace to it.

434.495 - 453.583 Heather Brooker

It's beautifully shot, beautifully acted by Joel Edgerton and just a wonderful movie there. And also I want to say Hamnet. Hamnet was an incredible movie. If you like Shakespeare, if you like dramas, Hamnet really goes there in terms of like drama.

453.563 - 471.003 Heather Brooker

And those are going to be a couple that I think – Train Dreams is probably not going to win much, if anything at all, but Hamnet certainly will, especially Jessie Buckley. She's nominated for Best Actress. She has swept the entire awards season so far, and there's a pretty good chance she's going to win again tonight.

471.143 - 483.537 Neil Saavedra

Now, the first time I saw – Tomorrow. I know, huh? It gets all wrapped in together. The first time I saw her was in, I think, Fargo? Was she in one of the Fargos, or was it –

484.816 - 506.771 Heather Brooker

She might have been. She's been acting for a very long time and kind of, I don't want to say under the radar, but this is certainly the movie that she's getting a lot of attention for. She was in The Bride, Lost Daughter, Men, Judy, The Career, a movie called Fingernails a couple of years ago. Do you remember that? That was a weird movie.

Chapter 3: How does Heather Brooker prepare for red carpet events?

633.819 - 643.03 Neil Saavedra

Heather Brooker with us. So go know where it's the fork report, Oscar edition, still a lot of food and stuff to come, but breaking down the Oscars as well. So go nowhere.

643.571 - 649.198 Unknown

You're listening to the fork report with Neil Saavedra on demand from KFI AM six 40.

0

650.933 - 670.815 Neil Saavedra

Neil Saavedra, KFI, Heather Brooker, KFI, tomorrow at noon. Don't miss her. It's one hour, man. She's here for our Oscars show, our annual Oscars show. Sure, we've got food. We're going to be talking food and the like. But we're talking about the Oscars. Your picks, Miss Brooker.

0

671.892 - 699.484 Heather Brooker

Yes. So I think that in terms, and wow, that was a long break. I can't believe it's already time to break again. I did two shows during that break. You really should. My picks for best picture is going to be one battle after another with a close potential upset from Sinners. I think Jessie Buckley is going to walk away as best actress. I think Michael B. Jordan is going to win best actor.

0

699.544 - 723.823 Heather Brooker

Maybe, maybe Leonardo DiCaprio, but I feel like Michael B. Jordan has some momentum behind him. And then, gosh, let's see. What else? Director Paul Thomas Anderson. I think that's pretty much a lock. Everyone kind of assumes he is going to win. You know, overall, I'm really looking forward to Conan O'Brien hosting. I really like him a lot. I think he's very funny.

723.863 - 725.727 Neil Saavedra

I'm looking forward to that, too.

726.415 - 750.309 Heather Brooker

Yeah, I think he does a good job of balancing what's currently happening with the absurd, with a sense of old Hollywood grandeur and a little bit of goofball. I think he's going to do a really good job up there. He said he's going to try some new things this year, so we'll see how that goes. And I think it's going to be an interesting time on the red carpet.

750.61 - 766.69 Heather Brooker

There's a little bit of heaviness hanging over us right now because of what's going on overseas. And I think also people, you know, their hearts are going to be sort of torn a little bit. Like what, you know, the excitement of the moment versus the heaviness of what's happening overseas. So it's going to be an interesting show.

766.73 - 773.365 Heather Brooker

But if Hollywood is going to Hollywood, they're definitely going to bring that pomp and circumstance. And it's still going to be a really fun show.

Chapter 4: What are the standout films nominated this year?

1030.024 - 1050.317 Neil Saavedra

But also she will be there tomorrow. As somebody who's reporting there tomorrow, Heather, and out there doing your thing, like you said, trying to get answers and your questions answered, What's the experience like? When does your day start? When does it end? And what is it like when you're there?

0

1050.348 - 1069.504 Heather Brooker

Well, the carpet closes at noon. So most of the media outlets who are going to be on the red carpet have to be there by noon tomorrow because they close it down and that's when they start welcoming in guests who arrive early. Nobody really comes that early. None of the main nominees do.

0

1069.624 - 1080.253 Heather Brooker

But they close it down at noon, probably for security purposes and just to make sure everybody's there and in their spot. And then almost, you know, you're in a one-foot-by-one-foot...

0

1080.233 - 1103.514 Heather Brooker

space uh shoulder to shoulder with other media outlets sometimes you may be next to a tv person sometimes you may be next to a print journalist or another radio person so it's like flying into this space yes it's like flying and you get your own middle seat everyone has a middle seat joy And, yes, such a joy. And you're just in there sweating.

0

1103.855 - 1128.488 Heather Brooker

And when the stars start to arrive, it's like a cattle call. You just start yelling for people, hoping they come over and, you know, give you a couple of seconds of their time if they have it. If you know a publicist, maybe a publicist will help you out. Generally, they go to the larger outlets, the big media outlets like E! Access Hollywood is leaving, but they'll be there tomorrow.

1129.129 - 1145.094 Heather Brooker

And then if you're lucky, you may get a few people who have some time to talk with you, and so that's sort of the hope. And then you just sit there and you sweat for a few hours, and everybody goes in. They have to be in there and seated when the show starts at 5 o'clock.

1145.114 - 1164.612 Heather Brooker

And then at that point, they start breaking down the red carpet, and I will move over into the interview room and the press room where the winners will come backstage after they have won. And once again, I will try to, like, you know, get a couple of questions in there. I mean, we're talking about hundreds of media outlets that go to these things.

1164.592 - 1180.655 Heather Brooker

And it is really tough to get a question if you're not one of the larger outlets. But I'm going to do my best. You know, if anything, I'm just going to take a bunch of selfies and post it on my page, maybe even a KFI page. I'm sure Michelle Cube will love that.

1181.075 - 1192.371 Neil Saavedra

Oh, absolutely. I just think, man, that is, I'm like, what would you do to get attention? Do you wear a funny hat? Do you look at me on your forehead? Do you, you know, it's like,

Chapter 5: Which performances are expected to win Oscars?

1530.712 - 1556.145 Neil Saavedra

And how, you know, food is certainly part of that. So I was thinking through, you know, the different nominees and things like that as to, well, what, like, if you thought about making a cocktail for sinners, it would be sultry and smoky and warm and refreshing. You could feel the heat in that movie. You could feel the sweat in that movie. And it's,

0

1556.125 - 1584.023 Neil Saavedra

the difference between bad sweat and good sweat, like sweating on the dance floor versus sweating in the fields. I mean, there was the reality of those two things and how gathering, coming together and socializing and connecting over food, food and drink show up very potently in the movie Sinners as a way to,

0

1584.475 - 1607.918 Neil Saavedra

is a very distinctive way, and it becomes part of the voice of the film, as to what people deserve to break away from what's going on in their life. To have that simple pleasure of having drink, food, music, connection together at one place.

0

1609.096 - 1641.901 Neil Saavedra

And how, you know, whether you call it, you know, girls' night out or guys' night out, or if it's a cultural group, in this case, African-Americans coming together and saying, you know, they deserve to have that break away from sweating in fields to sweating on the dance floor. and the absent of the weight of life in those places and the importance of that.

0

1642.462 - 1665.656 Neil Saavedra

And it tips its hat to the Asian community as well. And even the relationships of whites in growing up in these areas when it's like, well, at what point are you family or not? Like at what point have you seen enough to understand or you haven't seen enough to understand? Because you know the difference.

1665.776 - 1699.163 Neil Saavedra

When you catch somebody, there's one character that you go, okay, they may know the difference. And then there's other characters you go, they don't know the difference. So it just, I thought that transformative type thing that makes you... Doesn't preach or explain. It gives you a peek, which I think is more powerful. Just a peek. See something going on in the life or with crazy ass turns.

1699.263 - 1736.265 Neil Saavedra

But that being said, it was just incredible. You know, fascinating to watch. Frankenstein was fascinating. I'm a huge fan of del Toro. And when I saw Pan's Labyrinth, which is one of my all time favorite films. I was gobsmacked with the beauty and horror in these things. But just a lot out there in films that move me. And then sometimes it's just popcorn and take me away for a little bit.

1736.345 - 1763.153 Neil Saavedra

But there's some times where you sit and you feel like you're getting to watch something that is very real or insightful even though it has unreal elements tied in i highly recommend it if you're open-minded to letting a film take you somewhere some people i'm sure won't like where it goes but you know keep in mind that it's a very interesting Very interesting path centers.

1763.994 - 1786.943 Neil Saavedra

And I had friends recommend it very early on, but I didn't get a chance to see it except when I was sick a couple weeks ago and on the couch. All right. Back with more go nowhere. More to do on our Oscars show. The Oscars are tomorrow, of course, on the Fork Report. KFI heard everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. You've been listening to The Fork Report.
