Why is this weekend a huge deal for Warriors fans?
So huge weekend coming up for the Warriors fans around the country.
Like me, for example. Here, wearing my merch on the outside. And on the inside. For the first time ever. Well, it's funny you say that because um Bex Manabatter texted in just before. She said, Jeez, I saw you on Instagram in a Warriors shirt and I agree it looks weird on you. Effing weird on you. Thank you very much, Bex. Not not sure it's your age though, I think it's just a subset of one. Um I love your work team. You wear the merch symbols.
Beauty. So so yeah, huge fa uh huge weekend coming up. Uh but imagine if you were someone who puts ten dollars on them each year at the start of the season to win the grand final. Because obviously the odds at the beginning of the season to win the grand final much longer than uh than now when uh when they've narrowed down quite a bit. And imagine if you were a person who had done that for the last twenty six years. I can't, Jerry, I'd need to talk to someone. Well, luckily Manoya, our next guest has done just that. We can talk to him. His name is Mark Thomas. Good morning, Mark. Welcome to the show.
Get it, how are you? And you're talking like this is something strange. I don't get it.
Yeah, yeah, does everyone not put ten dollars on the Warriors to win every year?
How did Mark Thomas start his $10 yearly Warriors bet tradition?
Yeah, well it's been something that's been a tradition for me for, I don't know, at least twenty years, so one day it's gonna happen. And I
guess that the closest you've been is two thousand and two and two thousand and eleven. What are what are your memories of those years?
Oh, two thousand and two it's it was the same sort of vibe as uh it is now, you know, everyone was talking about it. There were lots of fans wearing the merch and uh but back then I was I had a uh record shop, Real Groovy in Wellington and um I was encouraging all the staff to get behind the team and we were actually faxing in those days the team in uh over in in Sydney. Just with with messages of support. You know, it was And that was a great game, man. We had a a party at our house and it was a good night, apart from the result. Didn't matter though.
Uh Mark, obviously twenty six years, ten dollars a year, year down, two hundred and sixty at this stage. What were the what were the odds at the beginning of the season this year?
I actually checked that last night 'cause I hadn't hadn't even looked at that, but I think I stand to win two thirty if they do it, so that means pretty much all my money back, isn't it?
You're just gonna end up square if they win this whole thing.
Yeah, yeah, and that does no problem. No problem for me.
Do you well, yeah, not only are you square, but you're also right, and I think that's a big part of betting. Um, Mark, what what's the biggest odds that you remember going into a season?
Oh I I I honestly can't remember, but there I mean as as we all know, there's been some seasons where It hasn't ended well and, you know, the odds are pretty good at the start of the next year. Honestly, this has just been a tradition. I'll do it at the start of the year, um without fail and it doesn't matter what the odds are and and I never bet against the Warriors. Does it it doesn't matter whether I'm in a tipping comp or whatever, so obviously Occasionally I don't end up at the top of the tipping tank.
We're talking to Mark Thomas. He's uh put ten dollars on the Warriors to win the grand final every year for twenty six years. I are you confident this year, Mark? How are you feeling?
Look, I'm confident every year, but uh yes, uh there's something about this team, um, the way that the the coaching staff talk about uh and the way the team uh talking in their interviews and like when the team was named on Tuesday I think everyone was anticipating who that was gonna be and wh who was gonna make the side and soon as I saw that I was like, Wow, you don't get much stronger than that so I mean, there's a lot of talk about how t how good the dolphins are. We've got to get through them. But um Yeah, I am confident, although slightly nervous too.
We're in our Warriors finery, uh Warriors regalia this morning.
