What’s the first reaction when a date says they don’t drink?
What would be your the very first thought if you're on a first date with someone and they say that they don't drink?
This can be a long night. I've either had one or two drinks before the date or I've had a drink pretty much as soon as I got to the date. Pretty much all the dates I've been on have been I've been completely sober. I'm probably not completely sober. I'm alcoholic social so It was hard at first because of the pressure that I received from peers. I find myself having a beer sometimes and I don't even know why. I just drank a lot, so don't want to be so nervous and scared. Oh well I was a bit f ⁇ ed up. Was it really me kind of all there or not? Did you kiss? Did you have sex with him? Yes. Did both? Yes. when you have to transition from the always drinking to sometimes drinking, that can be hard, you know? Uh-oh, we have to get to know each other now.
Especially with Tinder. You know, that's probably half the reason why most of my dates haven't been sober because I'm meeting someone that I've never met before, that I haven't interacted with in person before. The fear of the unknown of not knowing who you're going on a date with is really terrifying sometimes. The hookup with Hanna
Reilly. Love. And in
honey.
On Triple J. Morning.
Sex and adult themes.
There was a point last year where I wasn't drinking often, but when I did, oh boy, it was way too much. After one particularly big night and big blackout, in my hungover shame the next day, I decided I wasn't gonna drink for the next three months. At the same time in the back of my head, I was like, well, I guess I won't be dating for the next three months. Which made me realise I hadn't ever been on a first date completely sober. I had no idea of the influence that drinking had on my love life until I stopped. In this podcast we're talking about dating under the influence, about drugs, alcohol and addiction. If what we're talking about brings up issues for you, you can visit counselingonline.org.au, a twenty four hour drug and alcohol counseling service around Australia, or you can call Lifeline on thirteen triple one four.
I am joined by Corey White, he's a Sydney comedian who kind of burst into the spotlight after winning Best Newcomer at Melbourne Comedy Festival in twenty fifteen.
I remember being eight years old, visit my mum in jail and uh you know, I'd be naughty, I'd be mucking up and she'd be like, Oh, stop being naughty, stop mucking up and I'd be like, or what? You gonna ground me? You've been grounded by society.
Welcome back to the hookup. Oh, thanks for having me on a wonderful Mother's Day.
Yeah, yeah. We are talking about uh booze and drugs. What does a Saturday night look like these days for you, Corey?
For me, uh I'll I'll often uh get out a copy of uh Pride and Prejudice and um sit by a uh a fire and um sort of mull around a glass of um brandy and then uh flick through great literature. And uh you know, no it's I I'm I'm very boring these days, uh incredibly boring. But I think you're going to the next part, which is the past. Go on.
Yeah, I have um I have the follow up question to that hard hitting first one that I gave you. Has it always been like this? It
hasn't.
Oh shock horror.
How do personal drinking habits affect first‑date nerves and expectations?
I uh no, I I used to uh do a lot of drugs. I was a a an ice addict for uh like a a year when I was like nineteen, twenty. And uh Saturday nights were very different. Um uh they would last for three or four days. And time
space continuum just sort of breaks down.
Yeah, yeah,
totally. Yeah. That's how I knew whether I was doing meth. It's like am I doing meth? Oh yes I am. Oh
yes, absolutely.
Uh and yeah, I would just uh I would be yeah, smoking uh ice and and I'd be up for days. And I I very rarely read any of Jane Austen's work during that period.
That's a shame.
Yeah. I I watched a lot of So You Think You Can Dance.
No way, really. I really did. And then you definitely did think you could dance while you were watching it.
Oh I I I was dancing as I watched it. I knew. Um I knew that I was the best dancer in the world.
Now a as you've been saying, you've had a pretty full on experience with addiction.
