But for some reason, and I have no idea why, because you guys, it's 2020, it's still kind of a taboo. Especially when we're talking about getting down during that time of the month. So why is that? Nat Tencich is my name, and in this episode of the Hookup, we're gonna answer all your questions about period sex, help you figure out how to talk about it, and break down that stigma. We'll cover whatever you want us to talk about on this show, and this week we got an email from Emily asking us to look into writing when you're on the rag.
She wrote, To me, it has been a massive no-no. But I'm in a new relationship and my boyfriend is totally okay with it. I've been talking to my girlfriends about it, and they all do it too. I was in a long-term relationship previously where my boyfriend made me feel like it was terrible. Taboo. I feel like this would be an interesting topic to cover. Now it's not really a surprise that Emily's friends all do it. A recent study by menstrual brand Moxie found that about half of people who menstruate have sex on their periods. Here's Moxie founder Mia Klitsis on what the study discovered.
We surveyed over 500 obvious with periods aged over the age of 15 years. And the aim was really to look into the common misconceptions and attitudes towards periods because as we know there are still so many stigmas and we often just get so many questions about about periods and intimate health and we realise that people perhaps aren't getting the info that they're seeking for whatever reason. And as part of that study we we realised that twenty three percent of people think that you shouldn't have sex. When on your period. And forty four percent actually do stop having sex whilst on their period. And I think it sort of comes down to this like very old myth that period sex is unhygienic or it's dangerous and there's nothing unhygienic or dangerous about you know menstrual blood.
And so yeah, it was it was really, really interesting to uncover some of those things and to just um it's just so important to further amplify the fact that these myths are archaic and it's twenty twenty, they don't belong here.
Honestly, like what are we doing here? I mean, were there any other myths and misconceptions that you encountered when uh hearing from these these people who menstruate?
I was actually really surprised to learn and and again this was a question that we had seen over the years, uh people questioning whether they were still a virgin, if they used a tampon or a menstrual cup. Now, virginity is a a topic for a whole other day, but six percent of people that we surveyed did believe that using a tampon or a cup meant that you were no longer a virgin.
What did the Moxie study reveal about attitudes toward period sex?
And again, there's a lot of uh a lot of cultural things around that and a lot of old wives tales that that, you know, talk to things like that. So Again, I think really just understanding that there's a diff a difference between menstrual health and intimate health and intimacy and sex, they're you know, they're two different things.
W what attitude did you see in there that you would really like to see um, you know, that w that was kind of That you would really like to see die, I suppose. Like this idea that period sex is unsafe. Like wha which one was the thing that really gave alarm bells for you?
Yeah, I think that's the one that there's a there's this misconception that menstrual blood is unhygienic. And that it's a dirty thing and we do read a lot of themes where in a lot of cultures young women or people who experience periods are sent away to deal with their periods and then come back kind of when it's when it's all done. And and I think that's a really, really archaeic view and I think that's one that, particularly in a developed country like Australia, we really need to be opening up more dialogue around that because
